Characterization ch 3-6: he becomes more isolated from the others, and gets a deeper understanding of human nature, he begins to understand what the “beast” really is, he represents goodness and intuitions, 

Characterization ch 3-6: struggles with leadership and wants to give up his position as chief, he noticed they gravitate towards Jack more, he gets upsets when jack lets the fire go out, he remains more focused on civilization by wanting to build the shelters, but also becomes aware of the thought that the boys may become violent and cause a divide. 

characterization ch 7-9: Ralphs character has changed because he is slowly losing control over the boys as Jack starts to overcome him. He starts putting fun before his basic needs. He is tempted by meat and joins the party on the beach.  

characterization ch 10-12: Ralph starts giving up on his sense of civilization as Jack takes the boys and becomes their new chief.  He feels true guilt and remorse from Simon's death and understands that he had murdered him. He insists on keeping his order set and when he goes to maturely confront Jack for stealing the specs he is mocked and laughed at. This further grows his isolation, and he keeps losing hope. He loses faith in humanity and from the death of piggy, he is left by himself in the darkness of the violent and savage other boys.

characterization ch 3-6: becomes more dormient and aggressive and grows more into the role of a leader, his obsession with hunting and control grows, he becomes the reason of the society collapsing.

characterization ch 7-9: He continues to embrace violence and shows his loss of civilization. Now he is into ritualistic behavior. He turns away for civilization, forming his own tribe and uses fear to control the boys. He embraces violence by offering the pig head to the beast symbolizing his surrender. The theme is developed that without any social rules or laws, humans will turn on each other.  

characterization ch 10-12: Jack is the opposite of Ralph in the sense that he shows the real savageness of humans and prioritizes hunting, chaos, and living for the moment. He has completely given up all civil-ness and likes violence and hunting. He has no guilt for the death of piggy and could care less. To maintain his order, which is all he cares about, Jack continues to make the other boys feel as though there is a terrible beast still out there to get them, not that the beast is themselves. Jack being power hungry also trying to kill Ralph but ended up being embarrassed by the officer that rescued them. 

characterization ch 3-6: remains intelligent, he is mistreated by jack and is hurt by that, he finds it easier to share his ideas with the boys, he symbolizes logic, he is not in favor of the violence happening 

characterization ch 10-12: Piggy was the last representation of civilization on the island, other than Simon. Piggy, although refuses that he ever killed Simon, was trying to make his actions less savage. He is in denial of the things that are happening around him but still longs for rules and order with the conch, which he died with. When Piggy died with the conch Ralph realized that was the last bit of civility left on the island. And he no longer had piggy to be with him with all the darkness around him. 

This system ensured that each boy got a chance to be heard. The conch and the 

system helped the boys all act civil to one another and prevent their group from dissolving into chaos

symbol ch 3-6: Throughout the chapters, the conch becomes less important to the boys in terms of holding it allows you to speak. Jack is arrogant about the conch and always interrupts whoever is speaking. This shows the boys becoming more violent and rude. And how they change when there are no adults, and they are left with themselves to survive on their own.  

symbol ch 7-9: The conch begins to develop as a powerful symbol of civilization and order. Initially, the conch represented a democratic power among the boys and shows the boys commitment to communication. As the story goes on the boys begin to lose respect for the conch and gain obsession with the imaginary beast that focuses on all their internal fears.  

The idea that the fire would cause them to be noticed created a sense of hope and optimism as they had an opportunity to get off the island. While the second idea of fire is that it foreshadows fire also foreshadows the boys' potential for savagery. Because if the 

boys aren't carefully managed and don't act civilly, they will begin to descent into savagery and destruction. Because like a fire, if the boys' order isn't carefully managed, the group of boys can quickly get out of control. 

symbol ch 3-6: The symbol of fire changes through the whole chapter. In the beginning the fire is very remembered which represents the boys desire to be rescued and saved. They are trying to be responsible and be adult-like. Later, Jack and the hunters become more focused on hunting and soon forget about it. They abandon the fire to hunt a pig which they think is more important. When a ship passes and doesn't see the island because there is no fire going, it represents how the boys are becoming more savage and moving away from civilization. It shows how easily the boys can abandon something when something more interesting is another option.  

symbol ch 10-12: The symbol of the fire in the end was ironic because in the beginning of the book Ralph made it clear that the most important thing that the boys needed to do was to make a fire. They had to keep it going for passing ships to see the smoke and rescue them. But in the end, Jack set the entire forest on fire looking for Ralph to kill him and by doing this a ship sees the fire and rescues them. It is ironic because the fire was used in a savage way but accomplished what Ralph wanted in the beginning. 

Jack, Id: Jack has a hunger for power and to be the leader. As the story goes on, he descends more and more into savagery and becomes violent. He has given up civilization and has chosen to run wild and live however he wants. The choice of violence shows how the id becomes dominant when given the opportunity and chance to. He does what he wants without any remorse or guilt for the situation and only cares about himself. He ignores the rules Ralph puts down and prioritizes other things like hunting and violence. 

Piggy, Superego: He shows reason, ethics, and commitment to rules and staying with the rules and laws of civilization. He is very practical and intelligent and likes to follow the rules. He thinks of the conch as a symbol of authority which keeps the structure of a society civil. He tries to analyze situations logically giving realistic solutions, but the boys ignore it. His glasses are their way to survive by being essential for making a fire which shows him being intelligent and a need to survive.

Simon, Superego: Simon is a superego, but he is more spiritual than Piggy. He represents a mystical sense of compassion aligning more with a sense of morality. He is very kind to everyone, especially the littluns. He helps them find fruit an makes sure they are ok. His empathy stands out among the other boys and is the same as in a society. He understands the beast as a part of human natures. And he understands that the beast is not "real" but something inside of them, something internal. He sees the deeper darkness with the boys around him.

Simon: Simon starts hallucinating and talking to the lord of the flies that told him that there was no beast, but that it came from inside the souls. A theme that was explored in this scene was that the most brutal monsters are not external but exist inside your souls. The similarities are that they were horsing with both Simon and the sow and tortured them.  

Boys obsession: The boy’s obsession is meant to communicate their inner fears and darkness within themselves. The author uses the beast to convey that sometimes monsters don’t exist on the outside as external creatures but are within the boys’ inner selves.  

symbol of beast: The boy's behavior is what brings the beast into existence, so the more savagery the boys act, the more real the beast seems to be. The beast is this imaginary thing that the boys made up to justify their actions on the island. Jack uses to beast to scare the boys and says they will be safe if they listen to him. He took advantage of the situation and used it to make him look like a better leader. At the end it becomes something like a cult, how they would be leaving it sacrifices and demonic things. All of their moral and civil reasoning is gone and they are left with imaginary things.
