Unconditional Love Part 2

"One day dad leaned over my bed and asked if the nurses and doctors were treating me okay. If they were not, he said, he would kick some asses."(page 12)
"I had this crazy urge to scoop him up in my arms and charge through the doors-to check out Rex Walls-style one more time"(page280)

I chose these quotes and this picture because it shows how much her father cared for her despite his rough and rigid exterior. He used his gambling and thrifty skills to help get her the money she needed to stay and finish college. Although he did cause much of the hardship, he did it because he thought it would be good for her. The crumpled bills was kind of a way to try to repay her for some of the things he put her through as a kid, and thought she deserved to finish college and still get an education. She reciprocated this love when he died and wanted to give him the going out he would have always wanted

"But Dad didn't trust hospitals, so he took her to a Navajo witch doctor who cut open the wound and put a dark brown paste on it and said some chants and pretty soon Lori was as good as new"(page 13)

I chose this quote and this picture because it shows that her parents didn't believe in the traditional way of doing things. They would rather take great risks and do the unconventional way of doing things than to conform to society.

"A few days after Mom and Dad brought me home, i cooked myself some ho dogs. I was hungry, Mom was at work on a painting, and no one else was there to fix them for me"(page 15)

I chose this quote and this picture because it shows how she had to learn to do things and take care of herself because she knew there wasn't always gonna be someone there to help her or do things for her. She had to learn to be independent and not rely on almost anyone.

Fantasy vs Reality

"Dad was so sure a posse of federal investigators was on our trail that he smoked his unfiltered cigarettes from the wrong end... Mom, however, told us that the FBI wasn't really after Dad; he just liked to say they were because it was more fun having the FBI on your trail than bill collectors." (page 19)

I chose this quote and picture because it shows how her dad had a different perception of the reality of their situation. Being chased by the FBI was his fantasy, where the reality was that they were being tracked down by bill collectors. he was in denial, and made up a more fun story of why he needed to constantly be on the move and untraceable.

"When my family came to visit, their arguing and laughing and singing and shouting echoed through the quiet halls. The nurses made shushing noises, Mom and Dad and Lori and Brian lowered their voices for a few minutes, then slowly grew loud again."(page 12)

I chose this quote and this picture because the quiet and composed manner of the hospital was utterly destroyed by the loud and disruptive manner of her family. The juxtaposition of the hospitals orderly manner and her family's chaos was very drastic and showed the two extremes of lifestyles.
