They have been administered by the Democratic National Committee since the 1852 national convention. Democrats are sometimes referred to as "the Party of the People," 

This process is important to a healthy democracy because before choosing the people's nominee it is important to know what issues your nominees stand for and how they plan to change things they don't  agree with. You can  also  see  other who support her and their opinions and past with. You want the best person for your country obviously so u want to find out the kind of person they are and the ways and values the possess to make the country as good as possible.

Tax Policy
The Democrats believe there should be cuts for middle and low income families, but believe they should be higher on wealthy individuals and buisness. 
Social Issues
Democrats tend to be more progressive in their views, agreeing abortion and gay marriage, but are very strict on gun control laws.
Labor and Free Trade
The Democrats want  to increase the minimum wage so that Americans have more money to purchase things and have a place to live. They also favor protecting American jobs by not having as much outside trade
