In 1990, the U.S. Congress reworked the 1975 law and gave it a new name. Working off the base of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, IDEA expanded many of those strong core belief. Also the reworked law put added emphasis on meeting the unique individual needs of special education students and preparing these students for an eventual integration into classes, and on a larger scale society, with other people (About IDEA, 2022). IDEA would come to an end after being reworked in 2004 (Wright, 2021).

In 1975, Gerald Ford signed off on what was undeniably one of the biggest steps to give special education students the spotlight they deserve. The law was put into place to give disabled students one of the most essential pieces of childhood given to other students: access to a free education while also granting them due process (Wright, 2021).

Not officially amended until 1966 and lasting only until 1970, this was the first major step towards equality for students with disabilities; although in the long term seen as more of a thoughtful idea than a true solution. The act gave grant money to states to help with the creation and development of programs for special education students (Wright, 2021).

This act was the successor of the law amended less than half a decade earlier. Much like the law that came before it, the Education of the Handicapped Act gave grant money to states to focus on the continued growth of education for the disabled with no specific intent for the money. There is no strong evidence that either law vastly improved the education of disabled students (Wright, 2021).

Often referred to as "IDEA 2004," this is the most recent piece of legislation targeted at helping special education students. Congress redeveloped IDEA for two main reasons: making sure students in the program are also prepared for the next chapter of their lives and to update protections for both students with disabilities and their parents (Wright, 2021).
