Nick's Desensitisation

The reasoning for Nicks seemingly unfathomable decision to stay with Amy at the end, even though he made it clear he was terrified of her, was desensitization. Amy's actions over the years had become normal to Nick, and the actions built up to the situation that happened in the book. He had been exposed to small levels of crazy Amy, so was able to cope relatively well with what happened. In the end he still loved her, and Nick wasn't perfect himself - maybe they were just screwed up enough for each other and were always drawn back.

Amy's motivation

Amy sees things in her own way. That they should be done in her own way having any other on not acceptable. The two diffrwnt personalitya that Amy has conflict with herown vision of what Nick should be like. The analogy with the frog jumping out of the water when it's hot and not jumping out when it's cold then turns hot is. The cold water is 'cool Amy' traping Nick and eventually becoming who Amy really wants (Hot water). Overall Amy wants it to be her way and diary Amy is merely a front to that.

Another theory is the "nature of the way people repeat patterns in their life's." Nick refuses to give up his relationship with Amy. He repeats his relationship again and again, in hopes that each and everytime, something might get better. He does this unconsciously. He is drawn to this repetition, and the reason for this repetition is probably his first initial attraction/relationship with Amg, which was so dream-like and good.

Dr. Paul Purl talks about how Amy has a mental disorder where she will hurt other people for her own enjoyment, which is really uncommon in woman. It mains begins when their a child, usually hurting animals or do things to test out this cruelty aspect. Amy has a mixture of personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder. Amy has a lack of perspective on what she's doing compared to society norms so she ends up being the hero in her narrative for herself, but she really playing the victim.
