In the end, I would recommend this book to people because I personally really liked it. If you're the type of person who likes suspense and mystery this would be the book for you. Throughout the book, you are kept on your feet wanting to know what happens next. Or even if you are into the extraterrestrial genre this would be the book for you because it explores the lives of aliens coming to live on earth.

Make a change

If I had to make one change it would be to learn more about the characters themselves and how they managed their way through their journey. The book is sectioned off into three parts all relating to a different person from the Nine. I feel as if their stories are cut short. The moment they are about to be captured the author suddenly transitions it into the following section. My change would be to have their stories continued to the point where they team up with one another to fight the Mogadorians and end the war.

Comparison

A book I can compare this to would be The Giver. In the book The Giver as well as in I am Number Four their destinies are chosen for them. In The Giver when the children turn a certain age they are expected to devote their lives to the job chosen for them, to the spouse chosen for them, and the children were chosen for them. In reality, they have very little freedom to choose anything for themselves. They have to follow certain regulations just like in the book I am Number Four. Although in I am Number four their jobs nor their children nor their spouses are chosen for them, but their destiny is put into place. They were the Nine. They were sent to earth to train their lives away to be ready for war. They are not allowed to marry the humans nor lose focus on their tasks. The one big difference you can find in the books is that in The Giver the people are not being hunted down for their deaths unlike in I am Number Four they are on the brink of survival.

Quotes to remember

The quote that most stood out to me when thinking about the theme was, "When you have lost hope, you have lost everything. And when you think all is lost, when all is dire and bleak, there is always hope.” It stood out to me because even though the main theme was survival, hope still played a big part. In order to have the stamina to fight for your survival, you need a little bit of hope. There were many times in the book where they were put in situations where the best idea seemed like giving up. They had nothing to lose except for their lives, which is why I liked this quote because even when it seems as if there is nothing left but to give up you can always find that light at the end of the tunnel. If they weren't going to survive for themselves then they were going to do it to make up for the loss of their Cepans lives.

All throughout the book survival is one of the main themes shown, this theme develops rather quickly. Right from the start, the Nine are put to the test to fight for survival. Over and over again the Nine have to choose between their own lives over the lives of their Cepans. The only way the Mogadorians are able to kill all Nine is if they kill them in order of their numbers. Therefore, survival is key to keep those after them alive.
