Provide examples of both appropriate and non-appropriate actions on the internet and explain why certain actions are appropriate and certain actions are not. Explain how in order to be a good digital citizen, you must follow the rules of netiquette.

Activity: Have students draw a picture of what they picture in their heads when they hear the words netiquette and digital citizenship. When done, give students the opportunity to share their picture and explain why they drew what they drew.

After researching these topics, there are many things that I have learned. I previously knew how to act on the internet, what is appropriate and what is not but I was never taught that and had to learn through mistakes and watching others. Prior to my research, the only thing that came to my mind when thinking about how to behave on the internet was to not say offensive things to others. I learned that there are many other aspects associated with these topics such as not plagiarizing, not posting your address, not posting others information, etc. Cyberbullying was something I have never participated in and was the only aspect of being good digital citizen that I was thoroughly taught about throughout my education. I learned how important it is to educate students of all ages on these topics because although I was lucky enough to be a good digital citizen and follow the rules of having adequate etiquette on the internet, not everyone knows how to properly act naturally. I have witnessed others being cyberbullied, posting things that could potentially hurt them in the future, and inappropriate things. The people I have have witnessed doing this received their education at the same place I received mine, where we were only taught about cyberbullying. I believe if my peers were educated on how to properly use the internet and were taught the rules of netiquette, these situations could have been avoided. 
I never considered educating students on these topics until I educated myself on them. Although I knew how to act on the internet, not everyone does and teaching children starting from the very beginning on their education career can help form good digital citizens. Providing students with this information from the earliest age possible and help build good digital citizens. Teaching them to not cyberbully, and what exactly cyberbullying is can have a great affect on students and help prevent cyberbullying to occur. Teaching students the importance of not sharing personal information from a young age can help prevent them doing it in the future. Showing students what can be considered fishing can help prevent their information from being leaked. All these reasons are why is it important to start at the earliest age possible because the earlier you learn it, the more engraved in your mind it will be.

Lesson: Before the activity show students videos on cyberbullying and private vs. public information. During the cyberbullying video stop and ask students what they would do in the situations given. Ask multiple students to get various perspectives. While watching the video on online privacy ask students what posts the boy makes are safe and which ones are not. After each video discuss how the students feel after watching and ask them to tell the class something that they learned. 

Activity: Students will participate in digital citizenship Jenga. This activity will feature a classic Jenga game but with each wooden block painted a different color. Each color will have a corresponding prompt on it that relates to digital citizenship.

Post-Assessment: Ask students what they learned while doing this activity. I remember learning about this when I was a child by commercials on television but I don’t remember learning about it in school. I think this is very important to teach to your students or your kids especially now that technology is becoming more of a key component in education. I think it could be beneficial to teach this lesson before students are given internet access at school. Maybe you can bring you students to your schools computer lab before doing research so they become familiar with how to be respectful to the schools resources. I also think it would help students to go over these expectations before any research based assignment. 

Something I did not consider before doing this project is that children are using technology for the first time at much younger ages. It is important that parents also understand how children can be safe online regardless of their age. Now that children are using technology as toddlers, this should not be a lesson that starts in school, I think it should start whenever a child is exposed to technology. It is also important for adults to monitor what children are seeing on their devices and to put in place any necessary parental controls. 

My research has strengthened my belief that this is a lesson that is very important to teach at any grade level. This is important information that should be reinforced multiple times. Different ages of children present new dangers that the internet may bring. When students get older they could be exposed to more content on the internet and they should be given a time to ask questions about how to be safe as they access new information.
