My name is Yasmin but you can all call me Yaz for short. I am an Agriculture Economics major and a first generation student. Agriculture has always played a big role in my life and I want to give back to this community like it has given to me. My family is also very important to me and i want to help farmers, like my dad, prosper in the agriculture business. In my spare time I enjoy kayaking, hiking, riding quads, and spending time with my family and friends. 

Sustainability to me means something with potential that can be managed or supported with time. For instance, I am enrolled in a Sustainable Vegetable Production course and in this class we are going to plant vegetables and monitor their growth and take note of what works and what doesn't. I can also apply this definition to myself. I can meet my own goals throughout life and figure out what helps me grow as a person and learn from my mistakes. 

Information literacy is being knowledgeable and certain that the information one is getting is credible. As writers in this course we must practice smart information literacy and determine if the information we are getting is the most accurate for our papers/annotated bibliographies. This also applies to the real world because if we are all spreading information illiteracy it would be like we're all playing a big game of telephone. We would be spreading misinformation. Which is something that happens in our everyday life. For example, during this pandemic a lot of information regarding the virus, masks, and vaccines has been all over the place. This makes it difficult for us to determine what information we are receiving is credible. 

Because this is an English course I am curious to know how sustainability plays a role in this class. Will we apply it to our every day life? Or will we utilize it in our writing. I want to see how COVID-19 affected the economy in the agriculture industry here in California. The people involved in this topic are farmers here in California. Agriculture plays a big role all over the world and California is one of the main exporters for many items. We have agriculture from the northern part of California all the way down to southern California. Our state provides our country and other countries with nuts, fruits, vegetables, meat, and so much more. With the shutdown last year we lost a lot of profit from other countries (e.g. China). 

It will be difficult to access information based on this year's exports considering the fact that most of the harvest is currently happening at the moment. This topic will be mainly focused on last year's COVID-19 experience. My research is important because there were many shortages this year and it is important to find out what factors played into this shortage. It is also important because farming involves our environment and providing food for people involves the social part of the pillar. My research will briefly mention all three pillars but the main focus is on the economic portion. 

Because this is my major I hope to learn more about how our economy was affected by COVID-19 and what we did differently this year to adapt to these circumstances. I know one specific farmer that was affected both in the almond and beef industry. This farmer had to sell part of his almonds in order to stay above waters this year. I will be interviewing farmers, like this man, and ask them specific questions on how the pandemic affected them last year and what changes had to be made in order to make money.]]> 2021-08-31 05:33:15 UTC https://padlet.com/yvasquez29/c2s7enfplsodt639/wish/1706357524 No more silence yvasquez29 https://padlet.com/yvasquez29/c2s7enfplsodt639/wish/1720180881 I chose to analyze the article “ 'Everyone is Tired of Always Staying Silent’ : Inside a worker Rebellion in the Central Valley” by Julie Lurie published by Mother Jones journalism. The author’s purpose is to bring awareness to the people that immigrant workers are being taken advantage of in the agriculture community. Veronica Perez is an essential worker for Primex farms, a nut-packing facility, she explains how poorly employees were treated during the pandemic and is an advocate for farmworkers. People in the facility were testing positive yet still showing up to work because they weren't provided sick pay during this pandemic like other jobs were doing. Primex failed to inform their employees who tested positive risking their employees lives and their families. One rhetorical device they use is pathos. As a reader the author appealed to my emotions. Coming from an immigrant family and being a first generation college student, this article plays with my emotions. Perez fought very hard for her rights and her coworkers rights she began to get very emotional, "It makes me want to cry because my coworkers....I've tried to be really strong in front of them, but I can't anymore. We're only asking for a safe place to work." Perez exclaimed. It makes me sad and angry to see people, like my parents, being taken advantage of, but it also makes me very proud to see someone standing up for others and putting up with the consequences in order to receive justice. 


Julie Lurie is a senior reporter at Mother Jones; she has been a reporter for 7 years and 10 months. Her writing focuses on public health and criminal justice. She studied at Yale University where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in political science. The information she has provided is valuable and within her field of study. With everything going on with COVID-19 this information is important for everyone to know. Farmworkers are not being treated the way they should. Problems like this happen everywhere and nothing gets done until more people are aware of it. Key words used to search: It was very difficult for me to find journal articles that related to my research question. I had to break it apart and use other words in order to find articles that are remotely close to my research question. I used "pandemic and colleges" and I also used "pandemic and professors".

Filters used in search: Some filters I used were, "Peer reviewed journals, Years:2020-2022, Language: English"

How did I select the sources that I decided to read: I selected items by reading the title and seeing if it related to my research question, I then proceeded to pin the article so it would go to my favorites and I could look and compare all the ones I have selected in order to choose the best one.

What questions do I still have about searching: I found a beneficial article that I would like to read but it is only located at the library online. I wanted to know if it is accessible to students. This narrative can help solve my problem because it is a different perspective from my original one. On behalf of the English 2000 Critical Inquiry class, I would like to say thank you to everyone for joining us during these tough times. We appreciate the flowers, letters, prayers and support you have given us during these hard times. Karen Zandarski was a wonderful professor who changed our lives for the best. She was someone who showed us what the importance of learning was and guided us on the right path for life. She wasn't only a professor to us but also a friend who we could talk to about our struggles in life. Although she was my professor 2 years ago, we managed to stay in touch within those years. Every Tuesday we had coffee at a local coffee shop and we caught up on each other's lives. Karen was a wonderful daughter, wife, and mother. A quote of Karen's that I will hold dear to my heart is, " It's easy to point out problems.  It's difficult to point out solutions that are logical and feasible." This quote of hers will stick with me forever whenever I start to become negative about certain situations. I will attempt to figure out a solution first before pointing out the problem. Thank you Karen for being the light in everyone's life. Your legacy will go on forever and you will not be forgotten. Thank you.
