He earned a reputation for being stern and disciplined, for this he was given command of the 1st infantry Regiment. Tojo slowly climbed up the ranks and in 1940 was named minister of war. He had tension with the prime minister at the time, Prince Fumimaro. Fumimaro resigned due to the increase in tension with Tojo. With Tojo being the first successor, he assumed the role of Prime minister. His gain of power can be seen as just because of how slowly and genuinely he gained military control because of his characteristics and talent. This affected the people of those nations by forcing them to disregard their own customs and make way for Japanese culture. By conquering these places it gave Japan a support within the war when Japan needed more soldiers or resources.
