Hideki Tojo was the son of a Lieutenant General in the Imperial Japanese Army, which sparked his interest in taking part in Japan’s military/government. He graduated from the Imperial Military Academy and the Military Staff College. These as well as his role after WW1 led to him having a reputation of sternness and discipline that helped him gain the respect and power he needed to become dictator of Japan during WW2.

Hideki Tojo started out as Japan’s military attaché after WW1. He earned a reputation for being stern and disciplined, for this he was given command of the 1st infantry Regiment. Tojo slowly climbed up the ranks and in 1940 was named minister of war. He had tension with the prime minister at the time, Prince Fumimaro. Fumimaro resigned due to the increase in tension with Tojo. With Tojo being the first successor, he assumed the role of Prime minister. His gain of power can be seen as just because of how slowly and genuinely he gained military control because of his characteristics and talent. His gain of power can be seen as unjust because of the ways that he might have caused Fuimimora to resign, leading to him being the dictator of Japan.

One of Hideki Tojo’s successes was the conquering and expansion of Asian territory. Hideki Tojo conquered the Philippines, British Malaya, the Bismarck’s, Java, and Sumatra. This affected the people of those nations by forcing them to disregard their own customs and make way for Japanese culture. By conquering these places it gave Japan a support within the war when Japan needed more soldiers or resources. With success also comes failure which Hideki Tojo’s greatest mistake was the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Tojo’s lasting legacy is mostly negative. He caused the U.S.A to become involved in WWII. Through this action, he altered not only America’s history, by launching the attack on Pearl Harbor, but also Japan’s. By bringing the Americans into the war, he later caused Japan’s deadly defeat by the two nuclear bombs, that killed millions and affected every aspect of Japan.

It may have seemed like an achievement to Japan for getting back at the United States for the oil embargo but it turned the tides of war by getting the United States involved in World War ll. The bombing of Pearl Harbor affected the United States by forcing them to join a war they never wanted to be apart of but the U.S. could not stand ideally by watching their country turn into disarray.
