We were staying in a rural part of the country for a weekend and we were eating at a table outside when some warthogs came along. From a technical standpoint I like this photo for a lot of reasons: I like how different people in the frame are lighted, and the warthog looks menacing and mysterious as its features are shrouded in darkness. This contrasts with the brightness of my uncle, in his white sweater with the sunlight shining on him, which I think makes it intriguing. Also that everyone is focused on the warthog except my cousin Jesse, who’s looking at the camera, I think also makes it interesting. I also like how the trees and grass gram the image and, again, contrast with the darkness in the shady area. The bad camera quality also makes it seem sort of like a small painting to me. From a personal standpoint, I love this photo because it brings me back to my childhood in a very tender way. I remember the warmth of those visits and spending time with my extended family. The photo also captures the nature of South Africa very well - the dry grass, the strange trees and animals - which was and is exotic to me coming from a very different place. When I look at that picture it brings back the feel of South Africa, most acutely the distinct sounds. And I think those sorts of visceral experiences are what make memories. Not to mention I’m nostalgic for the tech of my childhood, so I frankly like the bad camera quality: I think it makes it seem mysterious and even ominous.

Totally contrived, I know. But I think there’s something more to it. This is a photo of our families’ two Chanukiyot on the third night reflected in our window in the pitch black of night. There’s also a lamp in our yard that you can see through the window. I think this takes on meaning because you can see the candles of the lowest chanukiya at the low in the frame, then above it there’s the lights of another chanukiyah above, and the light of these chanukiyot are both reflected in the window, progressively going upward in the frame, all the way up until there’s a lamp light, I think this represents the light of our ancestors who also kept this tradition being repeated (the reflections and candles progressively upward) all the way until an electric light of the modern day. I am the one on the viewer's left. The person on the right is my cousin, who was at the time 9, almost 10. I like this photo because we're shown in bumper boats, meant to drive into each other and bounce off, but we're holding hands. It was pretty representative of our relationship at the time: we fought often and each had our consistent issues with each others' temperament, but we still spent most of our time together. Likewise, the nature of the boats is to collide and bounce away, but we kept steering them alongside each other. My grandma is Jewish, and has lived in Israel for 30 years. This photo on its own depicts Jewish heritage being passed down through 2 generations, and the edges of picture frames surrounding it conveys how she and her culture are a part of the broader family's conscience as a whole.
