What are some practices of unethical and ethical companies? Take a few minutes to think about what you’ve learned through this activity and how you feel with the information you’ve gained. Then, answer the questions below.
Based on the scores the companies received on the Ethical Company Index, how would you rate your purchasing choices on a scale of 1-5 (1 = least ethical, 5 = most ethical)? Explain.
Do you think you want to change your purchasing choices to become a more conscious consumer?
If YES, what adjustments would you have to make?
If NO, explain your reasoning.

I would give my purchasing choices a 4, as I do want the best for our environment, but the main factors are for the workers in the manufacturing/producing processes of the company and if they are being treated with upmost respect and diligence. I do not want any exploitation in the workers or any child labor at all. If that was to occur, I would immediately try to boycott the company for their exploitative and disrespectful manners.

Ethical companies may treat their employees right, and pay them a fair wage, and use nuclear power. Unethical companies may use animal testing, unsafe practices to complete the work, and they may leave their waste unattended properly. I'd give my choices a 3/5 because I don't really know what all the companies I use are rated. I'd have to do more research on my companies to see if they are safe.

Unethical companies mistreat employees and can be misleading. Ethical companies use honesty and are law abiding. Based on the scores I have seen on the Ethical Company Index, I would rate my purchasing choices 3, showing how I should research more about a product before consuming. I do want to make changes to become a more conscious consumer, and I would start by researching how ethical a company is and who they support.

Some practices of unethical companies are outsourcing or completely offshoring their business/manufacturing to less developed countries that do not have laws protecting workers in order to maximize production output and profit to the detriment of the workers. Some examples of exploiting workers are overworking them, contractually binding them to the factory they work, and paying them enough so that they could survive but not enough to become independent and find better work. Conversely, good treatment of workers is a large indicator of ethical companies. The majority of these ethical companies would open manufacturing plants in the same developed country they're based in which already have laws protecting workers. Some of these laws include protecting workers' unions, defining minimum wage and maximum working hours, and ensuring fair hiring processes. I would rate my purchasing choices 2 mainly because of the brand of shoes I purchase. To become a more ethics conscious consumer, I will have to research the brands I purchase and decide whether they are ethical. If they aren't I will have to find more ethical brands to purchase from.

Unethical companies tend to do things that are unfair or wrong such as testing their products on animals and or humans before even knowing if the product is safe enough. They also might treat their workers poorly. Ethical companies tend to do the exact opposite. They are fair to their workers and they find ways to test their products safely. They also follow all the legal guidelines and laws that come with owning and managing a company. I would rate my purchasing choices as a 3 because the majority of places I shop are ethical companies but some places I shop are not which I just learned today. I think I would like to change my purchasing choices because I never really look at how ethical the company is and what kinds of things they take part in. Therefore, next time I shop I will check to make sure the company is ethical.

Based on what I read about Nike, their animal welfare score is suffering and they don't have the best human rights protections. UGG, however has good animal welfare, protects human rights and doesn't contribute political donations. I would rate my purchasing choices as a 2, because even though I do buy UGGs, my family buys many more Nikes than UGGs.
