Milkman's morals and values change throughout the story because of the stuff he went through, and saw people go through. Before, he undermined the issue of race because he is one of the few wealthy black but his eyes widened as he saw more of the real world and obtained more knowledge about how fucked up society was at the time and still is.
Macon Dead is a wealthy black man that lives with the white people. Hagar dreads her dark skin and wishes to be lighter so it is not as obvious that she is from an African descent. Macon Dead and Hagar both desire to be white because whites were more socially accepted and blacks were discriminated against.
