The Little Boy: Changes

Throughout the video, there were drastic changes in teaching from one classroom to the other and now. In the little boy's first classroom that he attended, he did not have the opportunity to be creative with his drawing that he was instructed to draw. Therefore, not being able to demonstrate his creativity. Instead, he was being instructed to draw a picture of a flower, using red and green. However, in the second school he attended, he was simply asked to draw a picture of whatever he wanted. As per the 21st century skills, allowing students the opportunity to be creative in schools yields their experiences with scenarios in which there are multiple possible answers and honours imagination (Ministry of Education, 2016). Now, we are providing students with more opportunities to be creative with their work and have choice/voice.

Another change is seen in the classroom itself in which the desks are set up. Within the first classroom that the little boy attended, the desks were set up in a way where students would not be able to communicate and collaborate with each other effectively. Within the second school that the boy attended, the desks were much larger and students were placed in groups which would allow for that communication and collaboration amongst peers to learn from one another. Now, we provide students the opportunity to learn from each other, in group work/group activities and allow students to establish positive relationships as they co-construct knowledge together and learn of different perspectives that their peers may have.

Bridda Licona Gonzalez

The narrative of The Little Boy highlights the importance of enabling and bolstering students' creativity and imagination. It is clear that based on the approaches of educators, and the learning styles of their students, the product of the students will vary. The 21st century skills combine life skills, literacy skills, and learning skills, which promote the creative process in learning and life.

The changes in content that are most important in today's classrooms are:

Collaboration: By giving students the tools to be able to efficiently and effectively we are allowing them to work with different groups and individuals which broadens their interaction and understanding of various concepts or ideas.

Critical Thinking: By encouraging students to engage critically with information they are given, or instructions they are given, we allow them to "think outside the box". Beyond this, we enable students to think about who is saying what their saying, and why they might have the opinion they are sharing. This is an invaluable tool in academia and life that can support students as they continue to navigate the influential forces and institutions in our society.

Initiative: Like The Little Boy, having the skill to take action and control of your own vision is key to student's having leadership and ownership over their course work. This enables pride, vested interest in course content, and reinforces knowledge retention.

The video shows us the approach of two different teachers and their teaching styles that affects the students in the classroom as seen with the little boy. There are many things that can be highlighted that changed throughout the course of the video.

The little boy in the beginning shows us his creativity and imagination when drawing pictures outside with chalk with all the colours. At his first school, the boy starts to demonstrate Innovation and Creativity by going ahead and starting without instruction. The little boy tries to enhance a concept, idea, or product while taking risks in thinking and creating. The teacher limits his creativity by showing him how to draw the flower and what colours to use to resemble what one would be in real life. This style of teaching does not allow the students to make discoveries through inquiry and by making mistakes.

When the boy enters his second school, the classroom environment is different. Students are sitting at larger tables rather than individual desks. This environment promotes the use of collaborative work and communication amongst students, compared to the first class where students sat in individual desks in rows. Around the classroom was also colourful that shows student creativity compared to his first classroom that was plain and lacked student work or anything that promotes student engagement and innovation. Collaboration in the first classroom would be able to establish positive relationships amongst students and be able to learn from others. Communication in the first class would benefit from students voicing their opinions and advocating for ideas — something that the little boy was scared to do.

The last change in content is allowing for student voice and choice. The second teacher allows students to freely draw whatever they please in order to create their drawing. Without their drawing, she can’t establish a picture for them. After her check in with the little boy, even after getting confirmation on being able to use any colour, he still takes the safe path and draws the same flower in the same colours as his first teacher did. To me, this is something that completely takes away from student choice in their work all while ruining their self-confidence and their ability to learn and grow. His past experience compared to his new one also lacks critical thinking skills as the little boy waits and waits upon instructions while all students just jumped right in, something that he used to do and was told not to.

The three changes I noticed are:

classrooms are no longer built on taking away and limiting children's expressions and creativity - we celebrate and welcome that now.

Classrooms are more engaging now - the desks are bigger now, colorful, full of children's pictures and artwork, and there's discussion.

We allow for diversity and curiosity now - something that was not evident in the video. We welcome and want children to find their voice, draw on experiences and culture, and share their perspective with us.

The curriculum now considers social emotional learning and the 21st century skills that have been adapted to today's world. Those skills weren't a priority in this era, so they didn't exist in the classrooms.

The video highlights the shift from traditional teaching, where the students/the little boy, follow instructions and passively absorb information in his first school, to a more student-centered approach that focuses on fostering creativity and critical thinking in his second school. This shift mirrors three key changes in education today: first, the focus has shifted to teaching 21st-century skills like critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and etc. Second, there is a greater emphasis on developing learning skills such as problem-solving and adaptability, rather than just memorizing facts. Third, curricula are increasingly designed to connect learning to real-world contexts, encouraging students to apply knowledge meaningfully and engage in inquiry-driven exploration. These changes reflect a move towards empowering students to take ownership of their education and actively engage in their learning process.

-Dianne

In the video, there are very noticeable changes from the past and present regarding the content we are teaching.

The first thing I noticed was how the classroom showcases the traditional sense of teaching, where the students are to copy what the teacher does. In relation to the 21st century skills and learning skills, this defers from now as we often let the student choose how they are to learn based on their skills.

Following the idea of traditional teaching, another change in practice is shifting from memorization skills to more critical thinking skills. These critical thinking skills that we are developing now allow us to tap into our 21st century skills on a much deeper level, allowing us to understand how and why those might be our strengths and weaknesses as well as how to apply them in the world optimally.

And lastly, another change I believe that has occurred is the movement from independent learning to collaborative learning, focusing on how this fosters social skills along will learning skills. More of the 21st century skills can be seen to be more community or networking centered therefore, this shift to collaborative learning allows students to realize how their skills allows them to build and grow in community.

In the first classroom the little boy was in, the teacher would create things and then expect her students to replicate them. This way of teaching discourages students from using their imagination, and thus, doesn’t foster creativity. As a result, he struggled to draw a picture in the last classroom he was in, despite showing signs of creativity when he first got to his old school. Today, we encourage our students to be creative as it’s a huge part of the learning process.

In connection to my last point, the little boy wasn’t allowed to be innovative. Whenever he tried to create something, his teacher would tell him to wait, and then show him exactly how she wanted it to be done. As a result, he wasn’t able to take risks, be curious, or explore his capabilities. Today, some ways we foster innovation in our students is by guiding them through the inquiry process and helping them develop a growth mindset.

Lastly, there is a huge focus on collaboration in our classrooms. We often have students work in groups and share their ideas with their classmates in order to hear others perspectives. However, in the little boys first classroom, the students were sitting in rows, making it hard for them to work together.

Sabrina Teixeira Ursino
