Today it was my first observation with the first grade children. They are very nice but noisy. They are almost 33 students therefore it is a very big class. They showed me their green notebook for English class and I received also some beautiful draws. They are very curious and ask many questions all the time. I will work with them with music because there is no tv aviable in the class. As a routine they write the date and the wheather every class. They also have a "hello song". The directions are given in English and in Spanish. They need their mother tongue to clarify what they were asked to do.They worked with animals and pets. I will start my class with numbers but articulating those animals too.

Again the class today started with a "Hello song" I realize there is always background music during the class. The teacher writes on the blackboard the date and "what is the weather like today" question and they talk about the weather. Then she made a review of the contents of the previous class and gave students time to refresh their memory and write from the blackboard. The teacher had to use both L1 and L2 to explain the the tasks. Students were asking for correction constantly therefore there has to be time to correct the activities.

My first class with this group was about the numbers. In general they behaved themselves but some of them are very noisy and restless therefore it is a bit difficult to explain the tasks while there is always someone talking or singing or whatever they might be doing.

I talked to them about how to greet in the morning and how they can answer the question “How are you?”. I worked again with the charts I did for kindergarten and they really liked them.

Then I made them watch a video and they did a simple task in relation to that video. The video was about numbers but in relation to animals which was the previous theme. The idea was articulated the previous topic with the actual one.

I also showed them pictures of different kind of animals with different colors and numbers. For example “three red snakes” and finally they did some course book tasks.

- Lesson two was also about the numbers. The aim of the lesson was that they understand the math concept that a given number of objects can be assigned only one number.

- I started the lesson with a “Hello song” Now they got more vocabulary to answer the question “How are you today?” They remembered the pictures from the previous class. In my lesson plan I designed a very theoretical activity for the warm up stage but in the end I decided to change it for another activity more like a game. In groups boys and girls found numbers 5 and words five and created a poster they hanged on the class wall.

- They also watched a video and sang the song and they worked in groups to create different small posters with different numbers. Some of them had to paint, and others had to cut and paste color papers to create the poster with different numbers. They really liked that activity.

Last class was very motivating because we rounded many items they were working until that moment. They had worded with colors, shapes and animals and I introduced them the numbers. I planned my lessons carefully in order to include as much items as possible. The numbers ‘lesson (from one to ten) included working with animals of different colors and shapes. For example I read them a story. Each page contained an animal with the shape of a number. Page two was a short story about a swan which represented number 2. Page three was about a bat which represented number 3 and so on.

They also learn very useful vocabulary for instance how to greet. I showed them different moods (sad, happy, ungry etc) and the meaning of words such as “silence”, “be quiet”, “listen”, “repeat after me”, “excellent work”, “well done”, “wonderful” etc.

In addition I also expanded their vocabulary making an interactive and colored poster that they could turn around and point the weather. They had options and draws exemplifying the different weather chances. This activity was very fun for them because it took some time to get an agreement about “What the weather like today” issue.

Well in the end I had to add one extra class to my primary practicum. The corrections were based on the way children behaved in the class (they were extrmly noisy) and my overuse of L1. I prepared my fourth class and tried to speak to them in English all the time. I also make them do silence and be quiet to understand what they were supposed to do. We played a game, i explained them different toys (color, size, shape etc) and they improve they behavior and the outcome was better than the previous classes. Now I am glad. I finished primary period. It was such a learning!
