While trading with Japan, America was interested in Hawaii. American settlers in the Hawaii found climate great for crops like sugarcane and that instantly blew up. Planters boomed with wealth. But in 1891, Queen Liliuokalani became queen in Hawaii and didnt like the American settlers in Hawaii. SO she put in a new constitution to regain authority over her people. Platers didnt like this, and planned to overthrow her. And with help from Boston, they made the queen give up power. They then requested the US annex Hawaii.

Latin America bought most of their goods from Europe but America wanted to increase their sales to Latin America. James G. Blaine, secretary of state in the 1880ś, tried to expand sales in that region. He introduced an idea where the US would invite Latin America to a conference to discuss how they could work together to increase trade. Latin America and the United States working together became known as Pan-Americanism.
