The paths make the outcome for his future, and the path he decided to take was success. By continuing his travel to a whole new country where he doesn't even know the language or culture, he still decided to keep going.

Choosing the easy way seems like the most obvious choice, to begin with, but it may lead to a much more uneventful and unfavorable outcome. Your future, success, and happiness may not turn out to be the best. Are you truly living your life to the fullest by doing everything the easy way? If you were to choose the hard way, you would be experiencing hardships, it would be a challenge to get your end goal. But the experiences you face along the way are what makes for an amazing experience and even if the end is unexciting, the journey you took along the way was rich with events. Santiago has already stumbled into the hard path. When his money got stolen from him, he felt like giving up, but he still pushed forward and carried on.
