Week 4: Just Keep Sewing!!

Week 4 – Just Keep Sewing !!

Tamilarasi Saravanan
A182410
7th July – 11th August 2023

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

Yes, absolutely. I was able to learn sewing terminologies from basic thoroughly. Moreover, I was capable of operating the tailoring machine and the other tailoring equipment appropriately in safe manner. Lastly, I managed to learn sewing 3 Indian traditional attire in different style and pattern in one month.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

I have enjoyed operating and stitching from the sewing machine. Unfortunately, that was my final week’s task so I felt that it ended very soon. Operating a sewing machine might have looked complicated at the beginning but once I learned the basics and practiced multiples times, it was not hard anymore. Even though there were many steps along the way to stitch a complete piece, I have jot down the steps of sewing in my book to refer later on. Sewing using the machine is actually easy if we remember the steps.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (Any part of the project you found hard to do)

The steps that I found challenging in this project are measurement taking and fabric cutting. For measurement taking we have to remember specific points in the body but unfortunately people have different body shapes and sizes. The measurement also has to be accurate so that clothes fit perfectly. Next for fabric cutting, if one cut goes wrong there are higher chances of that piece of clothing to be not usable. So, we have to be cautious during cutting the fabrics.

4. What has really worked? (Any part in the project that you thought worked well)

I have enjoyed the neck designing part in this project, it was challenging indeed but I feel like it turned out pretty good. The materials required for that part are not much, only a ruler, pencil and scissors. The steps are simple also, easily memoizable. I also needed less assistance during the neck designing part compared to the other steps throughout my sewing journey.

5. What can be improved in this project?

Sewing requires a high level of precision and accuracy, especially when it comes to measuring, cutting, and stitching. I have to pay close attention to measurements, seam allowances, and alignment to ensure my finished projects look professional. The next aspect I did not pay much attention is in fabric selection, I have to learn how to choose the right fabric for different projects. Understand the properties of various fabrics, such as their stretch, drape, and weight, and how they affect the final outcome of the projects. I also have to remember, improvement in sewing, as in any skill, takes time and consistent effort. So, I have to be patient with myself and celebrate my progress along the way.

Thank you...

Sewn baju kurung kedah

Name, matrics, date

Nur Amira Atiqah binti Che Shuib

A174324

14th August - 18 August 2023

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

Yes, all my objectives for this project were fulfilled. I gain a lot of new knowledge and also I develop new skills which I am not sure I can gain anywhere. With the ambient environment here away from the city such a perfect environment to learn. Compared to before starting this course, I have zero knowledge or even skills about sewing. But now I know how to sew clothes. I even have made a mini tote bag, a blouse, a men's shirt and also a pair of baju kurung kedah. I also learn a bit how to alter clothes using own measurement.

Furthermore, throughout this posting I can actually sharpen my communication skills. I talked a lot with the local community which eventually I am practicing on talking and practicing on building a rapport with a stranger in future. Moreover, I learn a lot of decision making skills which are applicable to all my projects that I have been doing here.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

The thing that I have enjoyed the most is during making the baju kurung. Since I have a bit of knowledge and experience from the previous project, the process of making baju kurung is so much easier. And this pattern is the easiest kurung pattern to be made, which I think i can make on my own in future.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

I found out the most challenging part from the project is to make a men's shirt. The hardest part was to make the collar. Although it is just a small part of the cloth, it needs to be made carefully and neatly if not it will b messy. I made it a few times until it was done perfectly. I learn a lot how to be patient in every single thing we do, and no matter how hard the thing goes on, I have to believe that I can do it. I figured out that this was also applicable during my medical school journey.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

I think that all of my projects worked well. The most part that worked well is my mini tote bags. I actually need only 3 days to finish it. Even Though it was my first project and I needed to repair a lot, I think I made it successfully. I also like the part where I made a blouse where it looks simple but it's not. To make the collar I need at least 3 sewing lines to make it lining beautifully. it does confuse me at first however i manage to get it done. Lastly, I like how my baju kurung skirt is done when at the waist part and upper part of the skirt to do ‘lisu technique’ where the pleated part at the upper part of the skirt. To make a skirt waistband is also a fun thing where I need to sew a rubber band and interline in between to make the waistband stable and more comfortable to wear.

5. What can be improved in this project?

Sewing skills are very useful because everyone needs clothes. I found out that when I learn these skills, I can alter my own clothes and there is no need to send to another tailor anymore. I also can repair my own clothes or my other family's clothes. Sewing skills is one of the healthy hobbies that can be practiced which also can be a therapeutic way to release stress and I can definitely use this skill when I need to take a break. Finally, I think that with this fundamental knowledge I can improve it by make it as a hobby and i maybe can join other sewing lesson during holiday.

Nurin Izzah Binti Mohd Rizam
A180927
13th August-18th August 2023

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

Yes, Absolutely. My objectives are:

Gain new knowledge and skills which can be applied in daily life.

Exposed to practical components to strengthened knowledge and skills of each field

Able to work as a member of a team, organization or community

Comply with professional organizational ethics in the work and social environment

During cosmetology, I learned about how to take care of our face, doing facials, makeup, and all the ethics as a beautician through theory and practical classes. I can do my own makeup now hahahahaa. It's not too good, but at least now, I don't look like I am sick 🤣

During Fashion and Design, I learned how to sew by hand and by machine, and how to make clothes. My mother recommended this program as in the medical field, we also need to do stitches, so it's a good opportunity to learn the basics of it and familiarize myself with needles and thread. Finally, this week, we finished making the Baju Kurung Johor. I also learn how to alter the clothes according to my measurement.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

I love going to their practical classes. They have their own spa and fashion studio. I was really excited and amazed the first time I entered their spa. It has everything from facial sections, Hollywood makeup tables, hair treatment equipment, manicure and pedicure sections. The most fun class was of course the makeup class. The students joked a lot, and they recommended various affordable good quality makeup products. I am naturally a shy person, however I didn't feel awkward at all with them as they were very friendly and outgoing.

Another thing that I love the most about this project is that I am doing this at school. I always miss my school time and always say that I want to go back to school 😭. So, being a part of the Form 4 class, made me remember my time at school. They had their theory subjects in the classroom just like my old classroom, they recited dua belajar before every class, greeting and thanking the teachers before and after every class. We went to the canteen together during our break, hearing the school bell ring at the end of every period really bring back a lot of memories 😍

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

The most challenging part is the sewing classes. Personally, I think sewing something, especially clothes, is not easy. I can see that most members of this group A also do sewing projects, and they did very very well. I was impressed.

Honestly, I still had difficulty in controlling the sewing machine, although I was a lot better than the first time. Sometimes I feel a bit discouraged when I see other members' projects. They can do it well on their own, meanwhile I need someone to guide me.

But my teacher, Madam Vivian, told me that everyone has different abilities and specialities. Some people learn faster, some people need a guide from the beginning to the end. Considering that I didn't have any experience in sewing at all prior to this, I am doing just fine in 2 weeks. After hearing this, I feel so much better and am working hard to improve.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

I think I did well and learned a lot in both courses although I only had 2 weeks to learn for each. During makeup class, my teacher, Pn Nasuha complimented the way I did the eyeshadow, blush and lips although I need to practice more for eyebrows which is indeed the most challenging part, but overall, it was a pretty look. I also learned how to do face massage during facial class, and now I am massaging my mother and sisters face, they said, it's not bad 🤣🤣🤣

For sewing class, although I find it challenging, at the end I was able to finish making the Baju Kurung together with the students that I was assigned with. She helped me a lot, I was really grateful. Never once did she feel annoyed with me although I am a bit slow. Madam Vivian also gave me several torn fabrics and I need to repair it using the hand sewing techniques I learned last week. I was proud to say that I did fairly well, just needed more practice.

5. What can be improved in this project?

Time. I underestimate the difficulty of sewing. I realized that I need more than 2 weeks to learn it properly. However, it was better than before, because initially I planned to learn 4 different skills in 4 weeks but chose 2 after advice from Dr Husna. I could say I was too excited to learn new things 😅. Besides that, nothing to complain about. It was a really fantastic experience. As for someone who is an introvert, home person and always in my own circle, it was good to mingle with different people of different fields. I was able to improve my communication skills

Title: TOP-NOTCH TOTE BAG (FINAL PHASE)

Anis Farzana Binti Faizal

A182938

15th August 2023

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

The three objectives that I wanted to achieve before starting this project was definitely fulfilled. The first objective was to familiarize the use and control of sewing machine. This objective was fulfilled during week 3 & 4 although it was the first objective that I wanted to achieve. Although quite late, I managed to get used to using the sewing machine and is able to produce various products using the machine such as pillow covers and a tote bag! The second objective was to provide basic skills and information regarding sewing and constructing physical materials. This objective was certainly fulfilled as I learned a lot regarding sewing as well as making physical products. Besides having an instructor to teach and give information about sewing and cross-stitching, I also watched YouTube as well as having books as a source of learning. For example, the book ‘Soft Furnishing’ by Heather Luke. The last objective was to obtain new skills and gain experience on sewing, soft furnishings and cross-stitching. All of the weeks that were spent for the project contributed to the fulfillment of the last objective. Overall, all objectives were successfully achieved.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

There were a lot of things I enjoyed about the project especially when I spent exactly four weeks on completing it. However, even though I enjoyed most of it, the most likable and enjoyable thing about the project is that I managed to successfully produce a few products of my own using a sewing machine! Using the sewing machine itself was fun and interesting. Making my own sewn products out of it makes the experience more fun and meaningful! The tote bag that I made on the last week (4th week) is my favorite product out of all because all the skills and knowledge I learned throughout the time I spent on this project were all put into that product of mine. For instance, skills such as measuring and cutting fabrics, straight stitch sewing, seam allowance awareness, pressing and ironings, problem solving and keeping attention to details are all required to ensure a great looking product, which is in my case is the tote bag. All of the skills that were applied in the making of the tote bag was learned throughout the whole project. Producing physical materials were definitely the highlight of this project, including the cross-stitch that I did during the second week.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

The thing that I found challenging about this project is the amount of time consumed when making a product. In my opinion, for a beginner and a starter like me, making one product takes a lot of time especially when you don’t immediately master a skill as soon as you learn it. In my case, the item I made that took most of my time was the cross-stitch pattern done during week 2. It took me 3 hours to complete only one design and a lot of patience was needed to complete it. However, the pillow covers as well as the tote bag did not take a lot of time as much as the cross-stitch design. Despite all the time taken to make these products, it was all worth it in the end as I am satisfied with all the items I made for the project.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

In my opinion, everything worked well throughout week 1 till week 4. From introduction and knowing basics about sewing and the machine to making different items and products was successful. I am absolutely satisfied with all the things I have achieved throughout this posting. Besides, I have also gained a lot of new skills that I could use in the future which I thought I wouldn’t ever acquire. I have even thought of making my own clothes using the machine and make more cross-stitch designs whenever I have time to kill. This was indeed a perfect elective posting for me.

5. What can be improved in this project?

Since everything about the project went well for me, I don’t think there is anything to be improved as everything was perfect. The duration of the posting, the time spent per week for this project, the reports, and my helpful instructor were all great. It was a really fun experience and I am glad that I actually get involved in this project. Thank you!

Name: Nurul Hazira Binti Rahamathulla

Matric number: A174290

Date: 19 July 2023 to 31 July 2023

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

Personally, I would say that my objectives were achieved. Firstly, I was able to increase my confidence and communication skills when attending the patients at counter. Besides, I did also learned lots of medication given for common health problems in Malaysia. This new was something that I really looked forward in my elective posting. I did also improve my clinical skills by getting more exposure of clinic environment and performing certain needed skills which are appropriate at my level. Although I did not get to do much on history taking, I am glad that I got to see how family medicine doctors summarizes their history taking session.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

Overall, I enjoyed my whole elective posting journey. One thing that I liked the most about the project is that I get to learn briefly how clinic works and specific job scope that are involved in them. Especially I get to know how does a panel clinic works and how the claims are done. I did also get to know about multiples incentives that is provided by government for health of citizens like Perubatan Madani. I did also enjoy gaining knowledge and knowing my senior clinic assistant experiences working in clinic for more than a decade. It was a wholesome journey for me to get to meet them.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

Things that I found challenging in this project is to memorize all the specific panels for each company. Each third party panel has multiple companies under them and each of them has different ways of registration for the patient. Some were straight cut while some are very lengthy. I frequently confused among the companies that listed together and even made several mistakes. I even gave wrong forms to patient to fill up that that had to fill up different forms. It was not easy at first but with several memorization and help from others, I did get the hang of it but some mistakes still existed. Liked wise human are not perfect, mistakes do happen, what matters is how we realize and correct them.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

In my opinion, my knowledge on medication that is used in common health issues really rose and I think that worked very well. From the beginning, I really wanted to know about the medication that is used and how actually they dispense the medication. Being able to watch it from the backstage was really an eye opening and I am really grateful for that.

5. What can be improved in this project?

Things that can be improved in this project is my involvement in the consultation of the patient. I did get to join few consultations but most of the cases patients don’t really feel comfortable of having an outsider during their consultation. Therefore, it limits my experience joining the doctor. I hope I can compensate this lack in my clinical rotation in year 4 that I will be entering soon. This way I get to fully polished my skills in clinic and learn more.

Name : Preesha Shanmugarajah
Matrics No : A173350
Date : 14th July 2023 - 20th July 2023

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?
I would say my objectives were definitely achieved.
My objectives were :

To learn communication skills and problem solving skills

To learn how to operate a restaurant and how essential teamwork is

To learn coffee making, plating, and specific skills related to the cafe

I had definitely learned better communication skills, with the entire team. I realised how important methods of communicating are when it comes to running a restaurant or anything at all. I also learned how to solve problems faced by customers or my colleagues and we'd solve them together, which is where teamwork comes in.
Never in my life would I think, learning how to operate a restaurant would be something I could have done. I'm glad that this elective posting has given me the chance to learn the ways of a restauranteur.
Now comes the fun part, I'm happy to say that I have learned how to make coffee, including the latte art. It was challenging for sure but it feels worth all the trouble to finally say "I can make latte art!!"

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?
I have enjoyed meeting the different types of people the most. I understand that throughout life, you tend to meet so many people and they help you grow. You have conversations about things you like and then exchange information and you're both more knowledgeable than before. This works with the customer and even my teammates, I appreciate everything we've shared because its made me a knowledgeable person in general.

I will finally admit that I am a coffee addict. I love coffee!! Working at this cafe has granted me access to coffee throughout the day and this brings me so much joy. It also makes me happy to know that I don't have to drive myself to a cafe to get cafe-style coffee now, I can simply make it myself from the comfort of my home.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)
The most challenging part would be finding the will to get through the entire day because your day starts at 7am, sweeping the front porch and ends at 3pm having just had quick lunch while the cafe's bumbling with customers. Its the will to stay and give the customers your all, smiling, being kind despite being stressed and tired, that does it for me.
Other than that, minor challenges like memorising the details of the menu, large orders, steps to making coffee were easily overcome with the help of my colleagues.
I also had to deal with fussy customers who complained about things but I truly adapted "customer is always right" and maintained a calm and composed manner while giving them what they wanted.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)
I personally feel that all my soft skills were improved through this project. I'd like to highlight a few : patience, resilience, perseverance, tolerance, communication skills, critical thinking and discipline (to wake up early everyday :D)
I was also determined to learn whatever they taught me, to prove myself to my team and also myself that I could learn fast and go above and beyond. I've certainly picked up a valuable skill of latte art and knowing how a cafe is run.
This has also helped me appreciate the many people I see working around me, I want to make sure that the people I associate with and also myself, would treat waiters and waitresses better.

5. What can be improved in this project?
I personally think it went well for me so there isn't anything to improve on. I believe I timed my learning process accurately to fit into 4 weeks and I had finished learning to do so many things. Perhaps I'd just want to own a mini coffee machine at home so I could practice at home and not lose touch with the art of making latte art! :)

Naveena Ramakrishnan (A177169)
7th August to 13th August 2023

Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

Yes, the 3 initial objectives I set were met & were perfected during the planning and sewing of my finished garments : collared men’s shirt, 2 types of face mask and a fitted blouse pattern. Through making these I could apply and practice the basic sewing techniques I learnt as well as reading and understanding basic commercial sewing patterns and learning to alter and create individualized sewing pattern.

2. What have you enjoyed or liked the most about the project?

I enjoyed how much practice I got using the sewing machine. Making the masks made me more confidents in sewing the shirt and proceeding to make the blouse pattern.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

Making adjustments after sewing a piece and realizing I did not like how it fit! Thinking of how to unpick and adjust the sewing so the darts fall better made me consider starting a new garment all over! However, as the saying goes your last mistake is your best teacher.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)
Sewing my garments using the video as a guide! It gave me the ability to re-watch tough parts and practice as many times as I wanted on scrap material.

5. What can be improved in this project?

The amount of content in the lesson plan for 4 weeks. Since I curated the courses to achieve certain goals, I strived to accomplish too many projects. I should have taken into account that I was a beginner and reduced the complexity of my projects to suit my time frame.

Crochet All Day

Name: Samantha Sue Junius
Matric Number: A181426
Date: 31/7/23 - 6/8/23

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?

The objectives of my crochet project have indeed been fulfilled. First and foremost, I set out to acquire new skills, and over the course of this journey, I've learned a variety of crochet techniques, from mastering different stitches to understanding how to read patterns and create complicated designs. Secondly, my project has significantly boosted both my creativity and patience. Crocheting demands creativity in choosing colors and patterns while the complex nature of the craft has tested and enhanced my patience. Lastly, I can proudly say that I've achieved the goal of being able to create my own crochet products. Whether it's a pouch, baby blanket, or stylish accessories, I now have the knowledge and skills to bring my crochet ideas to life. Overall, my crochet project has been a fulfilling journey that has met and exceeded my initial objectives.

2. What have you enjoyed or like the most about the project?

What I've enjoyed the most about this project is the immense satisfaction that comes with creating something beautiful and functional with my own two hands. There's a sense of accomplishment in watching a skein of yarn transform into something real that you can touch and use it. I also like that crochet can be used for many different things. There's always something new to try, and I can switch between projects to keep things interesting.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)

One of the challenges I've encountered in this project is achieving consistent tension in my stitches. Maintaining the right amount of tension in the yarn while crocheting can be tricky, especially when working on larger projects or using different yarn types. I still need to practice to develop a steady hand and even tension throughout my work.

Additionally, as with any craft, I've faced the occasional frustration of making mistakes or having to undo stitches to correct errors. It can be disheartening, but it's also an essential part of the learning process in crochet.

Lastly, joining and seaming pieces together, especially in projects with multiple components like blankets can be a bit challenging. Ensuring that the seams are neat and the finished product looks seamless takes practice and careful execution.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)

Firstly, the decision to enroll in an online crochet class with a structured curriculum has been highly effective. Breaking down the course into daily lessons and providing printable course worksheets has made it easy to follow and track progress.

Besides, the flexibility of online learning has been a significant advantage. Being able to choose my own schedule and learn at my own pace, whether it's morning, evening, or night, has been invaluable in fitting crochet into my daily routine.

Another aspect that has worked exceptionally well is the wealth of online resources available. Whether it's video tutorials, crochet forums, or pattern databases, the internet has provided a vast and readily accessible information and inspiration.

Lastly, the ability to take on a wide range of projects, from practical and functional items like pouch and water bottle holder to artistic pieces like amigurumi, has kept my interest alive. This diversity allows my creativity to flourish, and I'm excited to embark on my new journey of creating an amigurumi doll in the future.

5. What can be improved in this project?

Aspects that can be considered for improvement in this crochet project:

a) Skill Expansion: While I've learned a lot during this project, there's always more to explore in the world of crochet. Continuously expanding my skill by tackling more advanced techniques or experimenting with different yarn types and textures can add depth to my craft.

b) Pattern Creation: Creating my own designs is a goal for the future. Developing the skills and confidence to draft original crochet patterns would be a significant step forward in my crochet journey.

c) Staying Informed: Keeping up-to-date with the latest trends, techniques, and innovations in the world of crochet through crochet magazines, online communities, and workshops can keep my craft fresh and inspiring.

Week 4: Merdeka and my sajak performance!

Name: Salma Wael Marzouk Abouelsoud Hashem
Matrics No: A179287
Date: 15 - 20 August 2023

1. Were the objectives of the project fulfilled?
Absolutely! all 3 of my objectives and more were fulfilled. I am really glad I was able to learn more things beyond my objectives and expectations.

2.What have you enjoyed or like the most about the project?
It's hard for me to pick since honestly, I enjoyed the whole project! but a few highlights would be designing the map for 1000 Langkah watan program, creating a poem/sajak as well as the story board for the welcome video by our Vice Chancellor as well as performing a sajak I created on my own on my last day as a HEP intern and gotten many good remarks by the judges that were judging the HEP decoration and performance for kemerdekaan comettion among PTjs.

3. What have you found challenging about this project? (any part of the project you found hard to do)
Hard for me to identify really since my EP went well and was quite smooth sailing! maybe what I found most challenging was adapting to the working life as an intern were sometimes there would be no work and sometimes there would be a lot of work.

4. What has really worked? (any part in the project that you thought worked well)
What worked really well was the storyboard for the MAW welcome video, my sajak performance as well as handling the leadership camp with the primary school kids from SK Kajang.

5. What can be improved in this project?
I would definitely say the timing. Since we weren't aware of when we wold start our new semester, I started my EP exactly according to its slot in our timetable/takwim. However, after I knew we would end our holiday quite late (18 september) I would have chose/opted to start later (mid august and end during mid september) since that is when there is more progress for MAW that is held on 30 september till 4 october. My first week of EP since it was late July, it wasn't really that eventful due. However apart from that, I wouldn't change a thing, its all good!
