         <title>Classification of virtual reality</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>In general, modern VR HMDs can be classified into two types: standalone and tethered. The key difference between them is that standalone VR devices, unlike tethered, contain all the computing hardware components required to work in VR without the need to connect additional external hardware. Usually, standalone VR headsets have integrated graphics processing units, generating, rendering and visualizing three-dimensional virtual environment on the displays, and also contain embedded sensors that record the coordinates of the device, calculating its exact position and orientation in space in order to determine the correct user perspective when displaying the image. This characteristic makes standalone devices much more mobile in comparison with tethered and significantly increases their ergonomics, thereby positively affecting the user’s experience in VR. However, by providing mobility it also brings several important drawbacks. Most importantly, the performance of such kind of devices is directly limited by the processing power of the hardware built into them. This, in turn, leads to severe restrictions or complete deprivation of the ability to support technically demanding applications designed for high-performance systems. In addition, another equally important flaw is that the operating time of standalone devices is limited by the capacity of the batteries used in them. This prevents continuous use of standalone devices and requires the batteries to be periodically recharged, which negatively affects their convenience of use. For these reasons, tethered VR HMDs remain the most common today. Unlike standalone, in order to be able to work with tethered devices a separate computer is required. Such kind of headsets don’t contain any computing hardware except sensors, thus all data is processed on the other side – on the computer to which they are connected. Consequently, the performance of tethered headsets is limited only by the computational power of the computers used with them, which, in turn, allows them to work with more complex, advanced VR environments, in comparison with any other devices. On the other hand, the main compromise of this is the need for constant direct cable connection of the headset with a computer – this aspect, obviously, reduces the level of user comfort when wearing them. However, despite this drawback, tethered devices, among others, provide users with the richest, high-quality VR experience available today, which, in turn, explains their predominance in the VR hardware market. Additionally, it is also worth noting that recently a new hybrid type of devices has appeared (e.g. Oculus Quest), designed to solve to some extent the problems described above, supporting both tethered and standalone operating modes and allowing the end user to use the headset in the most preferred and suitable mode for him.</p><p>Apart from that, there is also a group of mobile VR devices, which essentially are a separate branch derived from the standalone category of devices, that work exclusively in conjunction with smartphones. In practice, mobile VR devices represent regular VR glasses with optical lenses, but usually don’t have any built-in hardware. In order to be able to work with them, a pre-configured smartphone needs to be placed directly in the glasses in a specially designated slot. In this case, the phone becomes the main "component" of the glasses. The phone connected to them, performs all kinds of necessary calculations based on the data received from its own internal sensors, generates three-dimensional environment and visualizes it on its display. Consequently, a user wearing such glasses perceives through the lenses the resulting image as volumetric, which eventually allows him to experience immersion in VR. Mobile VR devices, as well as standalone, are very ergonomic and quite convenient in terms of mobility. Furthermore, they are cheaper and, therefore, are more affordable for consumers, since they only require to have a smartphone, which, at the moment, has the majority of the population. On the other hand, they have exactly the same flaws as standalone devices, due to the limited computing power of the hardware of smartphones used with them. In addition, mobile VR glasses often don’t provide any tools for direct user interaction, like controllers, which make it possible for users not only to manipulate and interact with the virtual environment, but also receive tactile feedback on their actions – this negative aspect can lead to a considerable reduction of the sense of presence in VR.</p>]]></description>
