April 16, 1963 Martin Luther King wrote a letter for the clergymen responding to the criticism they forced upon him. King notes their claim of him being an outsider by explaining that he has come to Birmingham to fight injustices by taking action nonviolently. Using the Constitution and the Supreme Court decision of 1954, King expresses how African Americans are having their rights taken away and are being treated unjustly.

"We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God-given rights. The nations of Asia and Africa are moving with jetlike speed toward the goal of political independence, and we still creep at horse and buggy pace toward the gaining of a cup of coffee at a lunch counter."

"One who breaks an unjust law must do so openly, lovingly, and with a willingness to accept the penalty. I submit that4an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.Of course, there is nothing new about this kind of civil disobedience."(14)

"But more basically, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here...Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."(3)
