FEDERAL LEVEL NOW:
the estimated number of murders in the nation last year was 17,250. This was an 8.6 percent increase from the 2015 estimate, a 16.1 percent increase from the 2012 figure, and a 0.7 percent rise from the number in 2007. 
STATE LEVEL NOW:  the total number of murder in Illinois last year was 1,054 for a population of 12,801,539.

Conclusions: The murder rates are increasing at a state and national level. There are nearly 2,000 more murders now than there were in 2000 PER YEAR. Murder rate in Illinois increased by roughly 200 more since 2000.

At first Amanda tried claiming that her mother had been shot by somebody else, and called the police. But after being read her Miranda Rights, she confessed that at 9:50 p.m. she had enough of her controlling mother and pulled the trigger of a .22 caliber revolver.
