Wonder :

Why did I choose Wonder? Wonder is based on the life of a child named, Auggie. Auggie has Treacher Collins Syndrome. Treacher Collins Syndrome is a condition in which bones and tissue in the face are not fully developed. Auggie was born with this condition and since then he has had 27 surgeries. Auggie has been homeschooled for most of his life, up until the day his parents made the decision for him to go to middle school. His parents were very hesitant because they were scared, he would get bullied, but they knew it was time for Auggie to meet the world. On Auggie's first day of school he is introduced to three students who play a role in his life. One of the students named Jack Will, becomes Auggie's best friend. Another one of the students named Julian, makes Auggie's life impossible by constantly making fun of him. Auggie has moments where he is broken down by rude comments of his classmates. Auggie wants people to understand and accept him for who he is and not for what he looks like because that is out of his control. Auggie doesn't let this stop him and uses humor to brighten his life. Towards the end of the movie Auggie's classmates realize how brave and kind Auggie has been. Students accept Auggie for who he is and even defend him against other bullies. At the end of the movie Auggie receives a service award that represents him as, "His quiet strength, has carried up the most hearts". This quote represents the lesson that Auggie has taught others. Don't judge a book by its cover because you may find yourself with a box of surprises.

Point 1. Auggie chooses to be kind to others regardless if students were ever mean to him. This proves that if Auggie can forgive others for bullying him, everyone can learn to forgive. Sometimes we forget how to forgive because we have so much hatred in our hearts. But hatred will never lead us in the right direction, rather it will hurt us in the long run. I can relate to this key point because there have been points in my life where I have forgotten how to forgive and be kind. There have been times when I have said things that I don't mean. These are things that have come out because of the amount of anger I had at the moment. I realize that I should never say hurtful things because it isn't right. I feel that there have been times in my life where it becomes very hard to forgive and ask for forgiveness. I believe asking for forgiveness is a step that must be taken in order to understand the real meaning of forgiving. I believe that forgiving will bring true happiness to your heart.

Point 2. This story is an example of "don't judge a book by its cover". Auggie was a child with an amazing heart and personality. He dreamed of being an astronaut and loved playing video games. Auggie was like any other middle schooler. But his classmates judged him and labeled him because of his appearance. I have experienced this many time in my life. I have always been the type of student that does her homework every day and has good grades. But, a lot of the time my classmates label me as "smart". I have never liked the term "smart" used to describe me. I don't believe that anyone is "smart" or anything less. But I do believe that the input you put towards a specific goal will reflect on the outcome. I have explained to my peers that it's not that I'm "smart", rather I'm willing to put the extra work and go the extra mile to reach my goal. I believe that if you put your mind into it and think positively, anything is possible. I believe that no one should be labeled based on assumptions. You never know, if you get to know this person, they might be your lifelong friend.

Perseverance:

A concept that I learned in class that correlated with the story was perseverance. In the book of Fire in the Ashes, we see perseverance in every child who overcame an obstacle in their life. Many of these children lived in Emergency Assistance Units and were exposed to horrible living conditions, a poor education, and drugs. Many of these children had parents who were immigrants and came to the United States to give a better education for their children. Pineapple had grown up in a neighborhood where the education system was not the best. She was given a scholarship to a private institution where she felt lonely and intimidated by other students. Students in this private institution were wealthier, had no language barriers, and were prepared for success in their education system. Other students were academically ahead of her and Pineapple knew she had to do her best to make her parents proud. Pineapple reminded me of Auggie on his first day of school. Auggie was lost and felt judged because he was very different from his peers. But both stories showed the perseverance of each character. They didn't give up in their first try and they were not going to give anyone the satisfaction to feel inferior to their classmates.

The movie Wonder showed me the value of kindness. I believe this world needs more kindness. We see mass shootings, police brutality, violence, hatred towards immigrants, hatred towards gay rights, and there needs to be an end to this. Our world has become inhumane. We no longer see the world as a safe place and that needs to change. What are we showing to our younger generations? I believe so much violence in this world is showing our younger generations that "violence is key". Violence should never be key, rather we need to be reasonable. We need to learn how to be kind to others and forgive. Kindness is a value that parents need to teach their children. Kindness is a value that must be taught in school. Kindness is a value that must be taught everywhere around the world. This pushes me as a future educator to want to teach kindness to my students. I want my students to be kind and understanding to each other regardless of any situation. I believe if I teach my students kindness, it will be a key component that they will take through their life.
