It will almost certainty go down in history, no matter the result. How do you think, or how do you want, this period in American History to be remembered? Will it be seen as a failing of our government systems and procedures or a victory?
Do you consider impeachments significant in history, particularly this one?

Why Trump Should Be Impeached:

Ahem. Regarding the impeachment of a sitting president, the Constitution reads: “The President [...] shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” The current impeachment inquiry/hearings concern bribery. Bribery (as it is relevant to the current impeachment question) is defined in US penal code as when: “a public official [...] directly or indirectly, corruptly demands, seeks, [...] or agrees to receive or accept anything of value personally [...] in return for [...] being influenced in the performance of any official act” (18 U.S.C. §201(b)(1)). The term “official act” is defined in US penal code as “any decision or action on any question, matter, cause, suit, proceeding or controversy, which may at any time be pending, or which may by law be brought before any public official, in such official’s official capacity, or in such official’s place of trust or profit” (18 U.S.C. §201(a)(3)). That is the law.

In the context of the current impeachment question, the “public official” is President Donald Trump, the thing of “value personally” is an investigation into the family of Vice President and current Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden facilitated by the Ukrainian government, and the “official act” is the release of aid to Ukraine. So, the question at the heart of the impeachment matter should be posed as follows: “Did President Trump directly or indirectly corruptly demand or seek an investigation conducted by the Ukraine government into Joe Biden and his family that would damage the reputation of Joe Biden in return for the release of aid to Ukraine?”

To determine the answer to this question, we must analyze the actions and intentions of President Trump. On July 25, in a phone call between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelinsky, Trump indicated that he wanted the Ukrainian government to investigate the 2016 firing of a Ukrainian prosecutor. (In 2016, Joe Biden, under orders from President Barack Obama as part of an anti-corruption campaign, instructed the Ukrainian government to fire a corrupt prosecutor, who at the time was also conducting an investigation into Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company. Joe Biden’s son, served on the board of directors of Burisma at the time. It should be noted that Hunter Biden has been cleared of any wrongdoing in this area.)

A common argument against impeachment is that the Ukrainians did not interpret Trump's words as a request for an investigation. However, the Ukrainians planned to announce such an investigation on 13 September 2019. The only thing that prevented the announcement of the investigation was the release of the whistleblower's complaint on 11 September 2019.

I apologize that I could not finish this essay.

Obviously, it is a very important part of history and, therefore, should be taught in schools even if that means straying from the curriculum. Especially for seniors, teaching this would hold great educational opportunity, however, many history teachers are not taking the time to address this important event.

On a more important note, lets take a moment to appreciate the exquisite body of our current president.

I believe this period in history, the entire period of Trump's presidency, will be remembered as a time of significant divide within the country. American politics are extremely corrupt and I've lost hope in the government to do anything about it. The partisan nature of American politics is corrupt in itself, and many people have sold their souls to Trump because they believe anyone identifying as a Democrat is "evil." Of course not all Trump supporters are this extreme, but many of them are, including those in government offices.
That being said, I don't think anything is actually going to happen with Trump. Does he deserve to be impeached? Absolutely. Trump has committed numerous crimes that should have him removed from office, but as we have seen, nothing is going to be done about it. At the end of the day, Republican Senators wouldn't dare to remove their party line from office despite the nature of his crimes.

Donald Trump`s presidency is probably one of the most interesting in American history. I do not think the impeachment would have made a huge difference in the remembrance of this period in history because Trump has already left a legacy for himself. Personally, I have not been keeping up with the impeachment inquiry. It will be exciting so see how everything unfolds; however, it is not like I have any influence over what happens to Trump.

I agree with Abby. This impeachment will not likely go through, but it could affect voting. Everything I learn about the impeachment is from the news, but I hate the negativity that comes with the news and media so I try to stay away from it. It is difficult to find news sources that are not biased, which is why I wish I could learn more in my government class. I think that when people look back, they will see our government as a success because believe it or not, the country has been continuously improving.

Thanks, Ned, for asking us to think about this moment in history as we are living through it. It is interesting to consider how this time will be known in the future. As we have studied literary eras (which often correspond with historical eras), these are defined after the fact, so it is hard to say how this time in history will ultimately be viewed. In the moment, it feels like a period of divisiveness, with political opponents unwilling to compromise. As we, as a country, move forward, my hope is that our government will become more effective and less divided.

I'm not really sure how this period will be remembered in the future because politics right now are very divided. However, I think Trump and his presidency will be remembered no matter what. I believe that impeachments are important when necessary, but the current impeachment taking place has really emphasized the great political divide and tensity in our government now. So for the future, I think the government would be more successful and less negative if it was not so split.

I believe this time period will be remembered as tense and divisive. Both political parties have polarized in their views and have been less willing to compromise with each other. This can be seen in the House, where party lines in concern to the impeachment are being strictly followed. I believe that this impeachment is in part reflective of the increasing antipathy in politics from both political parties. Overall, I believe this hints at a failing of our political systems and is bringing our country down.

I think that people's views or political party might interfere with if they see this period as successful. Each side has such distinct views and some are unwilling to change or be moderate in them The impeachment of President Trump is extremely significant. His presidency is even historical as he's an entertainer without a political background. In a sense, democracy has failed us. He has violated the U.S. Constitution which is supposed to promote democracy, however corruption continues to occur throughout our nation.

Many social aspects that are popular or accepted today would not have been so in previous years. Due to the ideologies of most people straying to one specific side, this is causing us to become a more diverse nation, or so the media wants us to believe. Personally, I do not think that we are that much different, however, many stories that are publicized show the extremes of each side. As the years continue I think that more ideas will begin to be accepted as long as the nation can start to come together as one.

Not going too political, I believe that our country is in such a horrible place right now because we are so divided. Instead of focusing on the betterment of our country, most everyone is focused on fighting parties (democrat vs republican). Our time period will 100% be written about in history books for our partisan divide. Our grandchildren will probably be told to ask us what it was like to live in this time period for an assignment in schools.
