Diaspora, Migration and Race - Research task by Allyson Edwards

You must create a 10-tweet twitter thread presenting your research on the resettlement of a Diaspora group of your choice. In your twitter thread you must answer 4 questions: 1) How was this group moved from its ancestral homeland? 2) What was their experience in the new place they had moved/ been place/ exiled? 3) Why were they resettled? Did they do this themselves? Did they have help from someone else? 4) What were some of the consequences they faced during this resettlement?
To start a new 'shelf' or 'thread' in our case, press the '+' button in the bottom right hand corner of this page. Remember to include your name(s) on the shelf.

The potato famine, was a period of mass starvation, disease and emigration that occurred in Ireland from 1845 to 1852. It was caused by a potato blight, a disease that destroyed much of the potato crop, which had become the staple food of the Irish population. As a result, an estimated 1 million people died, and another 1 million emigrated from Ireland. The potato famine had a devastating effect on the Irish population and economy, and it is still remembered today as one of the worst tragedies in Irish history.

The Canadian-Ukrainian Diaspora has been galvanised following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. For many years leading up to the attack, Canada had been a critical contributor towards Nato Military training of Ukrainian troops following the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Following the 2022 invasion, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress has offered vital support towards the Ukrainian war effort, lobbying the government, raising funds, and gathering personnel and material to be sent to the front line.

It was hard to build on and grow crops and therefore difficult to survive off. They received help from native Teheulche Indians who attempted to lend a hand and taught them how to survive on the limited resources of the land.

As the group that migrated to Patagonia was so small in number compared to other much more recognised immigrated groups, some argue the diaspora of the Welsh is not one to be included in groups that migrated. However, having moved due to the fear and threat upon their country, culture and language along with the 8 week move overseas, it does fit into the bracket. And a small percentage of Patagonian people still maintaining the welsh culture and language as well as partaking in Welsh activities and events such as Eisteddfods (an annual welsh competition) and St David's day.
