According to Freud, the ego represents "reason and good sense". The ego operates to satisfy the demands of the id, without earning social disapproval. it operates based on what is acceptable behavior. Essentially, it allows you to satisfy your physical needs, in a way that is acceptable in society.

The super ego, According to Freud, is our sense of right and wrong. It keeps the ego in check, by comparing our actions to the definitions of right and wrong we learned from our parents/guardians. when we do something that goes against our morals, the super ego will induce self punishments such as guilt, or shame..

Freud states that there are 5 Psychosexual stages of development. He calls them psychosexual because they have to deal with how children develop in terms of the sexually sensitive parts of the body. There are 5 stages, that each come with their own problems. in each stage a child is likely to develop what Freud calls fixations. They must wrestle with the guidelines set out. In the Oral stage, a child will try to eat, or scuck on everything. They will encounter conflict when it comes time to wean off of breast milk.
The next stage is the anal stage. In this stage the child derives pleasure from controlling it's own processes of excretion. Ptty training is a huge problem here.
Next is the phallic stage. in the stage pleasure shifts to the genital areas. huge problem here is masturbation, and/or the oedipus complex. At this stage is the beginning of sexuality.
During the latency stage there really is no inherant switch. nor is there any inherant problem.
last is the genital stage. IN this stage, usually around puberty, the focus goes back to sexuality. This time however, it is focused on mature relationships. there really is no source of conflict here.
