As famously said by Greek philosopher Aristotle "We make war so that we may live in peace." 

The two competing ideologies of communism and capitalism were a major world issue throughout the Cold War era. An era which is unlike our own. During the 1960s and 70s, while countries were beginning to recover from the Second World War, the importance of maintaining civil rights in which grants us freedoms, was of upmost importance to the capitalist ideology (Which Australia itself is based upon). The importance of the US in winning the Vietnam War, would have donned the end of the 'Cold War' and the prevention of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan as well as Iranian Revolution, the Chernobyl disaster and political tensions held presently. 

The anti-war campaigns and the poor strategic decisions made by military leaders during the course of the war provided a stutter to the stronghold obtained by the US after the resounding victory attained after the Tet Offensive and the Battle of Khe Sahn. These events saw the lose of 45,000 NVA (North Vietnamese Army) troops and the decimation of key positions held by the Viet Cong. The only 'victory' that the NVA achieved through the Tet Offensive was the sway of media reports. The less than favourable news coverage within the US, led to a new wave of paranoia within the minds of Military Generals, who did not want to be in dismay of the general public. In turn, this led to an important strategic blunder by the US's Military Generals in their admirable fight against the raging force of communism.

The US government however, imposed even stricter rights of passage to those serving in Vietnam, in an attempt to subdue the consequences of the often misleading, dramatised and falsified news reports from the media. This perhaps is the turning point in the war, were the US began to lose in their efforts. Then i believe the war was impractical, too many people died for a war that was not their own. Additionally, too much resources were used. The US were unable to win from the beginning. These soldiers were peasants but they knew how to use the land and their knowledge of it to their advantage. While their enemy was dropping bombs every where. 
The US were trying to get rid of communism based on a theory that wasn't even proven. Since when does an effect become established suddenly when a person talks about it in a speech. Additionally, the US was trying to force their ideology onto another country. Wasn't that what they were fighting against when they were fighting the Nazi Germany?
The Vietnam War costed millions of lives both Vietnamese and American; and almost ALL INNOCENT.
