The two main religions of Japan are: Shinto and Buddhism. Shinto has been in Japan as long as the culture whereas Buddhism was imported in from the mainland in the 6th century. They have both been co-existing harmoniously since then. Religion does not play a large role in most peoples everyday life. People pay their respects at important ceremonies and visit temples occasionally at which they follow specific religious rituals.
