Chapter 1: Children, creative play, and the natural environment

Add your summaries, thoughts and reflections of the reading here. How does this reading relate to the temporal arts languages (music/sound, movement/dance and drama) within nature?

This Chapter emphasized the importance of children playing within the natural environment and how it helps them play in creative way. For children, nature is not just a landscape, but a place where they can wonder, explore, discover and create. They see the nature in different way from adults; they also interact with things around them differently. A stick can be a magic wand; leaves could be a money; gum nuts could be garnish for their food; and children can be who they want to be like a wizard or a cook.

It is a place where children learn and develop. A safe place that inspires them to pretend who they wanted to be, move freely and sing and create sounds that no one judges them. It was mentioned by Wilson (2018) that, "Findings indicates that pretend play tends to be the most dominant form of play outside." (p.4). However, most of the adults mistook playing as a waste of time and not helpful for children's future. And some overtakes children's pretend play without knowing that they are interrupting children's learning.

It is saddening to learn that some children are experiencing Biphobia due to the people around them and the achievement-oriented society where living. Which leads to children being deprived from positive experience that highly affects their development especially their sense that hasn't been used or developed. And because of these children finds it hard to express themselves and connect with other people.

This reading made me realize that I sometimes in some point that I have overtaken children's play before, and I should reflect on that. I should learn and practice more how to guide and support children in their play without overtaking it. As future educator, we should really be mindful of our interactions with children as it has a big impact for children's development.

For other people this picture is just a tree, but for me it's more than a tree. As I reach the top of the mountain I look around and saw this floating ship from the sky. The ship is shakingly moving as it goes with the waves of clouds while the strong wind blows into the ocean.

This experience reminds me of Dr. Peter Gray, my play is imaginative away from the real life as I play in self-chosen and self- directed way.

This experience makes me feel like a child again. The Parallaxis gives me opportunity to enter the pathway I always imagined about. The worlds I go to makes me happy because it is basically my childhood memories and the artefacts I got is like a provocation, it reminds me of those memories. When I swim with my family while hearing the sound waves of the ocean, the time we wake up early to watch the sunrise, when I jump from the cliff and I feel like flying. However, I'm really sad that I didn't do it the way I really want to as I feel shy, scared, embarrassed and feel judge by people around the area.

I got bullied at school and it really has a big impact in my self-confidence. It is really hard for me to stand in front of everyone or be in a public space. However, when I'm in front of children I really can express myself well and don't shy out during dramatic play, but I know there are still things I need to improve. As a future educator, I will make sure to create an environment for children where they can express themselves freely and feel safe. I will use nature to build that connection with children and it is really important based on Reggio Emilia approaches that the environment is a third teacher for children from the reading of Nature and Young Children.

As an adult I will do my best to be the best version of myself and be a good role model for children. I will not let my bad life experience stop me from doing what I love. I will use Nature as a tool for healing like Schafer (2009) mentioned, "I think if you listen carefully, your life is enhanced. I think it becomes much more interesting." (1:23-1:30minutes). We just need to listen and connect with nature, and you will move in the same rhythm just like Banarjee (2023) mentioned, "The human body has forever moved in sync with nature." It is a way of therapy you just need to move with your body and listen what's around you.

A fairy tale land that I always imagine about.

Just like The Parallaxis a game of walking between worlds. I always walk slow and observe what's around me. It is my way of relaxing to connect with nature. Similar with the Parallaxis which asks you to slow down and take a moment to have a look around your surroundings.

This is the soundscape I hear and the movement I see when I play. It affects the play as I see the sunset I want to climb up the mountain and feel like I'm in the top of the world. When the strong winds blow it reminds me of the strong winds I feel in my face when we do Island Hopping when I was little. And when I heard the birds, it makes me want to fly high.

This feeling of connection reminds me of Dadirri. As I listened deeply with my environment me that helps me feel connected and reminds me of my childhood.
