Stage 1: Basic Trust vs. Mistrust

In Erikson's first stage of development the mother is the primary central to development. This is the beginning stage where the view of the world is interpreted with trust or mistrust by the level of caregiving and response to the child's needs. My mother was busy trying to make ends meet in Mexico that she left me in the crib/playpen with my bottle while she did chores and baked bread to sell while taking care of my two older siblings. This led to mistrust in others.

In Erikson's second stage of development the father and mother are central to development. It is where the child asks themselves if it is okay to be themselves and thus it defines the child's self-determination and uncertainty. This stage was crucial in believing that I was not okay with who I was. Due to my immigration journey I felt ashamed almost like a criminal/villain because my mother and father, with the intention of protecting me, instilled the belief that we were not wanted in the country because we were immigrants from Mexico. In turn this affected my development of self-love leaving me with self-doubt and shame.

Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt

In Erikson's third stage of development the family the central to development. It is where the child may, "balance the urge to pursue goals with reservations about doing so." All while the child tries to figure out if it is okay to be them. With lack of self-confidence and the feeling of not belonging, l developed guilt and fear which kept me from trying new things or concentrating which affected my academic learning, eating habits and physical activity. This is where I started weight gain, which also affected my confidence when my sibling made fun of me and during this stage my family was the central to development. "There are also socioemotional consequences to obesity. Overweight and obese children are often bullied, they report fewer friends, and they must contend with negative stereotypes and social marginalization."

Stage 4: Industry vs Inferiority

In Erikson's fourth stage of development the neighbors and school are the central to development. The child discovers hi/her interests and asks themselves if they will fit in or feel secondary status. During this stage of my life, the lack of self-confidence and concentration had affected my learning progress which fed the feeling of inferiority. I struggled to learn the English language, therefore feeding into the out of place feeling as an immigrant. Teacher’s extra attention and positive feedback is what kept me above water. Towards the last years of this stage, (11, 12 yrs. old) seeing the teachers appreciate my hard work, started to push me to try harder. "If a child is generally praised for working hard and she fails at a task, the logical implication is that she did not try hard enough. That child might then be motivated to work harder next time."

In Erikson's fifth stage of development the adolescent goes through a journey of self discovery, wanting to know who they are, when they do not figure out who they are they can conform and or get lost. "Adolescents who resolve the identity crisis satisfactorily develop the virtue of fidelity: sustained loyalty, faith, or a sense of belonging to a loved one or to friends and companions." At the beginning of this stage I learned that the world can be cruel, and I went through an identity crisis. Bullying led me to feel inferior, ashamed of my background, of being Mexican and that my parents spoke Spanish. I felt lost and out of place. About the middle of this stage and after standing up to the bullies, I gained an enormous sense of pride and felt comfortable with who I am today, thus being the turning point in my life and defining my identity.

In Erikson's sixth stage, friends and partners are the central of development. There is a need for the individual to make a long term commitment and not end up isolated and lonely. During this stage I had a strong sense of identity. I allowed me to take the risk of letting someone into my journey and committed to being with him until my death. I kept only close friends, concentrated almost completely on my family and their needs. I had a long commitment with my spouse and therefore was happy during this intimate stage.

In Erikson's seventh stage, the individual wants to lead the next group of leaders all while feeling that they have reached a level of contribution to the community and society. On the contrary if the person does not feel adapt to lead the future generation, they become stagnant and melancholy. "At any point in the life span, development could shift in a positive direction, and a crisis might be successfully resolved and a new strength developed." At the early part of this stage, I am a leader, good example to follow, and I am doing my part as a citizen, neighbor, family member and friend. I am a hard worker. Currently working on a life-long dream of earning a degree. By the end of this stage, I will end up reaching a lifelong goal of obtaining a degree by continuing to work hard, contribute to society and feel content about it.

In Erikson's 8th stage of development the individual goes through acceptance and validation of one's life journey. He/She becomes their own judge and wants to know how have they done, they could feel content or with despair making them either happy or grumpy towards life. "Successful resolution of one crisis puts the person in a particularly good position to address the next crisis, a process that occurs iteratively across the life span." By this stage I would have slowed down, feeling content with my life, and financially set, due to having reached my goals. I will not have regrets because I gave my all to my family and community. Therefore, having integrity and not feeling despair and being grumpy.
