In the text, it mentions, “The distemper which my men as well as the blacks mostly died of was the white flux. . . . The (enslaved) are so vulnerable to the small-pox that few ships that carry them escape without it”. Slaves would also have to endure the bad conditions of the living courters of the ship they had to stay in. In the text, it states, “keeping their lodgings as clean and sweet as possible, and enduring so much misery and stench so long among creatures nastier than swine”. Here the captain of the ship, Philip, mention how he and his crew try to keep their spaces as clean as possible but in reality, those space were probably cramped and very dirty which could explain why smallpox and white flux were hard to endure for the slaves. The slave traders have to try their best to keep their slaves alive because their company will lose 10 pounds. Their living conditions were terrible as apartments had three to four large buckets for human waste. It was difficult for some people to get to these buckets because they had been shackled so at times, they would relieve themselves where they lied. Their food was also stored horribly as it was stored in small water bucket sized tubs. On top of this, if they didn't eat, their lips would be burnt with scorching hot coals put on a shovel. The air on the ships was not fresh and their surroundings were filthy and unsafe because of the amount of human germs such as blood and mucus which if spread to others can cause many different illnesses.
