Hello, my name is Namika RUSHIATOV and I am 75 years old; I am going to tell you my story. I come from Russia and when I lived there, there were religious persecutions because I am Jewish and I was very poor. In 1950, I was 15 years old and I decided to leave my home country to have a better life. I had to walk for days, I was a girl alone so I was very scared. During these days I met people but most of them died because they had nothing to eat. It was hard but I finally arrived in St Petersbourg where I took a steamship. After 2 weeks we arrived at Ellis Island. People under 16, who weren't with an adult had to go back to their country; I was an alone 15-year-old girl so I decided to pretend that I was 17 years old. The officers questioned me for days. I was afraid, I couldn't make any mistakes. There I met a little boy from Russia, his name was Piotr, he was only 12 years old, both of his parents were dead, so no one was with him. We became very good friends but after 5 days in Ellis Island the officers sent him back to Russia. The police believed in my lies and after four weeks I finally had the right to go in the United States. Mystay on Ellis Island was very complicated, I was home sick and I missed my three brothers. Even if I felt sad I was glad to be in New York. There, I lived in a little flat. The first two months were difficult but after I met people and I had friends, then I became a waitress and I met my boyfriend. After 2 years together, we married and we had a little girl, Camilla. I am very glad to be here because I have a good life, I am the happiest mother in the U.S and my daughter will live in a good living conditions. In 1950, I took the Americain nationality and today my life is better than I ever thought.

My name is Park Jimin. I was twenty-three years old when I left South Korea in 1942. Now I am seventy-six years old and I think that I am old enough and ready to tell you my story about my stay in Angel Island. I remember it very well. It was during World War II. I was a young lady, just married with a handsome man called Kim Taehyung. We lived in Seoul, a huge city, in a little traditional house . We were really happy and lived very well before the venue of Japane<del>a</del>se. They were rude and...only wanted to fight and persecutate Korean people. My husband had often conflicts with them. One day, they kidnapped him because of a money problem, and made drink alcohol until he became drunk. This event made him lose his job, his honor and his dignity. He was ashamed and we became poor rapidly. So he decided to talk to me about his idea to immigrate to the USA. I wasn't against this idea at all but...I was worried and felt depressed to leave my native country even if i knew that we would have a better life and situation there. We prepared all our things and two weeks later, we took a train to Busan and arrived in front of the steamship with our suitcases in our hands. When my husband and I boarded the steamship, I literaly cried with sadness. It felt so strange to leave our own country. Taehyung didn't stop to comfort me and hugged me even if it was also complicated for him. I felt selfish because I wasn't able to do anything for him. This terrible journey lasted twenty days on this horrible steamship. During all the trip, we didn't take a shower or slept in a proper bed. I was sick all along the trip with my husband next to me who was doing his best to make me feel better. When I saw the American land, I felt relieved that we arrived at Angel Island without more problems. It was the evening. We got off the steamship and they told us to follow an officer. It was the first checkpoint. He checked our papers during two hours! because there were a misunderstanding with our family names. After that, we slept in a small room that they gave us with only one bed for one person. I was so cold. I remember this night as the worst night of all my life. The second day, the doctors came and we all had to pass medical exams. Some people were sent back to their homecountry because of illness. I was hoping that we had nothing in particular. Our turn came at 7 p.m. The doctors welcomed us well and they were so kind and caring even if we only spoke a little bit of English. They took good care of us and one hour later, we left this second check point with good news. The two of us were perfectly healthy. We returned in our room and slept in the room of my nightmares. The third day, I was so tired because I had not slept enough. The officers woke us up with an alarm. It was the time of the interviews. We were questionned one by one and the families were separated. When my turn came, I immediatly understood thet the interview was going to be very scary. The officers were rude and did not even care to call me by my name. They were six for one person and they were calling me "the korean girl" in a mocking way. I tried to stay calm and answered to these many questions about all the details of my life without being terrified. One hour later, they let me out. When I left the office, Taehyung came to me running. He took me in his embrace and seemed very happy. I did not understand at first but he made me smile too by telling me that we were allowed to leave Angel Island. I cried with joy, hugged him tight and he kissed me. We took our suitcases and left. It was the beginning of a new life. 5++/5

We stopped on Ellis Island after sixteen days at sea. The officials on the Island weren’t nice at all and they treated us like animals. That was very difficult especially for my little brother. They asked us a lot of questions about were we came from and why we want to go to the US. It was very stressful. After about eight days in Ellis Island, we were allowed to go in the US. To start, we went to the medical inspection during which the officials checked our papers. Everything was perfect for us. For some people who were sick, the officials write letters and they were sent back to their country. We left the island after 3 days. I was so happy that I cry with joy.
In 1959 I and my family left China when I was twelve years old to escape poverty. My parents had then decided to leave to live in the United States. The day of the departure we left Shanghai by boat, the trip was hard and lasted 19 days. After trip, we were forced to pass by an island named Ellis Island. Once we got off the boat , we have summers controled for five hours then re-run to San Fransisco by boat. We arrived at the end of nine hours and we were finally in the United States. Shock was violent but relieving, finished poverty it was a new life for us. Three months later, my father found job, as well as my mother when has me, I had as ambition of working in finance, I worked hard for it and seven years later, me was registers in the school of Harvard. My name is PETER MCCARTY, I am seventy-one years old, I am famous and proud of my history!

Hello I'm Jean Louis Hubert De Ribet . I was 13 years old when I left France . Me and my family were poor and my mother was very sick . When we heard that we could go to the new world I started a diary to remember the beginning of our new life
13th December 1932:
My father works harder and he really wants to go to the new world but my mother said to him "I can understand that you want us to have a better life but it's just a dream. We are too poor to take a ticket for a steamship"
So he said to her :
"Maybe you think we can't but we need to try".
15th December
We are going to Bordeaux by foot we have to walk at least 7 days .
18th December
I'm very hungry, yesterday we didn't eat anything because we haven't a lot of food
20th December
My mother has headache more often and sometimes feels like she can't breathe so my father started to carry her on his back.
22nd December
We managed to arrive<del>d</del> to Bordeaux and we had enough money to take a ticket for the steamship but not for food ...
23rd December
My mother said that she couldn't go she was very sick and she wanted us to have something to eat on the steamship. It's very hard to let someone of your family alone like this with no money and no food (I feel bad because I know she will die)
25th December
It's Christmas and everybody is happy and share toys and food with each others, it's not very hard to sleep on the floor, we talk to people who come from Russsia, Germany, Spain and other countries
31st December
We've been on the boat for eights days today people aren't as happy as the beginning of the trip. Yesterday 10 peoples died of hunger.
11th January
People said that we would be in New-York in one day
12th January
We arrived at Ellis Island I was scared because it looks like a very old Hospital or a prison. In the evening it was our turn to pass the interview. they asked things like "where do you come from ? " "why are you here ? "
13rd January
It's my birthday and we are now at New York it's Beautiful but we have to work hard
23rd February I couldn't write because i had a lot of work but now it's okey we have a little house and we are never hungry we have a better life but I miss<del>ed</del> my mother I hope she was a little bit happy for our new life when she died
13rd December 1942
I found my old diary in a box. I read it and I feel like I had to tell the entire world that nothing is impossible so i decided to write a book so that everybody in every country can read it.

(What a story! Well done Benoît! 5+/5)

I remember my stay at Ellis Island very well. I'm going to tell you my story. I had left <del>from</del> my country because there was war. I came in steamship with a lot of people. Many people were sick during the journey exept me, I was not sick. When I arrived, I was taken to Ellis Island. I spent 10 hours waiting among the crowd to have permission to enter the United States. In short, my stay was not nice and especially long. After Ellis Island, I arrived in New-York. It was very beautiful, this city was really magic. At first, I tried to find a flat. Finally, I settled in this flat and never left New-York. I will tell you my adventure next time !
Maxence Richard 3e2

I could not move much and the only thing we saw was the blue sea. After many hours on the boat we got to see the island that we both wanted to get to Ellis Island
When we arrived the first thing they gave us was an identification letter to each one so they could register us. When I arrived, I thought that my dream of opening a store could come true. Within a few minutes they were calling one by one to do the medical exam and more. Later the legal inspection. When everything was over I went to change the money I had brought from my country for US dollars. I already had everything just had to leave but it was too late and I had to stay for a night on the island which was not <del>Nothing</del> comfortable but I had already fulfilled my dream as I was already in America. When it was day and I was going to achieve my dream I achieved it.

Hello, I'm Anja and I was eight when I left Poland in 1940. Now I'm eighty-nine, but I remember very well the journey and the arrival and now, I'm going to tell you my story.
My father, my brother and I left Warsaw after my mother was killed in an extermination center, only because she was Jewish. It was very difficult to go to the harbour of St-Petersbourg, because we had to hide and find some helpto pass throught the Nazi checkpoins and we were betrayed many times. After two month of walk we finally arrived in the harbour of St-Petersbourg; It was very hard to get a boat ticket, because it was very expensive and there were many nazis and it was written "Jewish" on our passports. After four days, we finally bought a smuggler tree tickets for New York. We boarded immediately and began our travel across the atlantic ocean. The journey lasted twenty days, but it was very hard, and my elder brother became sick. We couldn't sleep and we were uncomfortable, with other immigrants. We finally arrived in Ellis Island and some officials checked our papers. Then wehad to pass many medical exams ans my brother was almost sent back to St-Petersbourg, but he wasn't considerate sick enough. After tha, we had to answer many questions, during two hours every days. It was very boring and we stayed there ten days. Then we were sent to New York and my father cried with joy.

Mailys VICQ-DEROCHE

My name is Alissa Tehgodess and I was eleven when I immigrated. I was born in Poland, and, as you know, after WWII Soviets(Ruskies) occupied Poland.
There was a thing called 'Iron Curtain'. It meant you could not go abroad. You could theoretically go abroad as an artist and then ask for political asylum, but still, it was really dangerous. I remember how my parents told me the plan to ask for the political asylum in Ireland, and then, hopefully, move to America. They were very famous artists, so, by chance, Ireland gave them the permission to stay.
We boarded a steamship to America , and the journey was awful - immediately I felt seasick. Moreover there was not a lot of food.
I remember when we saw the Statue of Liberty. I, as a child, was shocked by that wonderful world that opened to me. I thought that it was utopia.
However, the reality was not as good as I imagined.
We had problems with documents, and my parents thought it was over, but the man who checked our papers recognized my mom, and let us in.
Over all, we stayed there one day.
When we arrived, we did not know what to do. Nobody knew us in America, so my parents sang in Polish-speaking community, and they did not get a lot of money.
I tried to help, and I started working as soon as I could.
And here I am, already with children, happy and calm. Nahum Schechtman
