His attitude, habits, and certain aspects of his character are things most parents wouldn't want their kids picking up. He knows it perfectly well, and he knows some kids like Johnny (and Ponyboy) admire him for his courage.

"He took a drag on his cigarette and cussed it good-naturedly for not being a Kool. Johnny listened in admiration. 'You sure can cuss good, Dally.'
'Sure can,' Dally agreed wholeheartedly, proud of his vocabulary. 'But don't you kids get to pickin' up my bad habits'" (82).

Though Dally isn't acting the most sincere in this quote, he really means it. He knows Johnny idolizes him and Ponyboy respects him, so they watch him. Dally knows how difficult his life has been, and knows he wants a better life for Johnny and Ponyboy than the life he's had.

I don't know what it was about Johnny - maybe that lost-puppy look and those big scared eyes were what made everyone his big brother" (88).

This quote shows not only shows that Dally despises his parents, but also how all the Greasers love and care about Johnny so much. Dally is no exception to that.

Dally is the kind of person to always act like everything is cool and nothing is serious or potentially fatal. The recklessness in his heart tends to overrule the logic in his mind. He ends up acting like everything is a joke, and nothing bad can happen. But despite Dally' character and the fact that he's virtually untouchable, he still cares about other deep down, especially about Johnny.

"'Johnny,' Dally said in a pleading, high voice, using a tone I had never heard from him before, 'Johnny, I ain't mad at you. I just don't want you to get hurt. You don't know what a few months in jail can do to you. Oh, blast it, Johnny' - he pushed is white-blond hair back out of his eyes - 'you get hardened in jail. I don't want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me...'" (90).

This quote is what really shows how much Dally cares about his friends, though Johnny in particular. Johnny's life is the closest to Dally's, and Dally knows that Johnny hasn't turned cold and hard the way Dally is now. Johnny's childhoods is a lot like Dally's, and it's starting him down the same path Dally's gone. I think Dally was a lot like Johnny once: younger, more innocent, and caring. But as Dally grew up, he became more exposed to violence, and he became used to it; he began thinking it was okay. He knows he can't protect Johnny from his own parents, but he knows that if he can keep him safe from crime and keep him out of jail, he can protect Johnny from becoming like him.

Dally is the type to be casual and violent, and find it entertaining. He's used to getting his way, and is willing to do anything to do so.

"'I thought you were in the hospital,' I yelled....
'I was.' Dally was having a hard time because his left arm was still in bad shape. 'I ain't now.'
'How?' .....
'Talked the nurse into it with Two-Bit's switch. Don't you know a rumble ain't a rumble unless I'm in it?'" (143-144).

Dally was willing to use a blade to convince someone to do something, which is already violent. He did it so he could get out of the hospital, and he wanted to get out in order to get to the rumble, which is even more reckless. After that, he laughs and jokes about it. Recklessness is one of Dally's most pronounced characteristics, and one of his biggest flaws.

A wildfire is reckless, aggressive, uncontrollable, and sometimes destructive. A wildfire is unfeeling, it doesn't care what it may ruin and what lives it may wreck. It seems selfish and emotionally cold. It can't be put out or stopped by a sprinkle, shower of rain, and sometimes is too out of control for people like firemen to put out.

Dally is a wildfire because he is all of those things: reckless, aggressive, uncontrollable, unfeeling, uncaring, selfish, cold, and he can't be stopped by policemen and sometimes even his friends. He doesn't seem to care about anything else. He's hardened and he doesn't seem to feel emotions. But if you really think about it, a real wildfire does all of that to survive, and so does Dallas Winston. Nothing in him is stronger than the sense of self-preservation. Their willing to do whatever it takes to stay alive, even if it means hurting other people.

Dally is the reckless, cold and aggressive, wildfire. Johnny's death is the thunderstorm that finally breaks and destroys him. Dally as a child may have cared about his parents and other people, and before he died he cared about Johnny. After so long of being hard and cold, he let himself love Johnny, and he was taken away from him like almost everything else. Dally couldn't take it. A wildfire comes from nature, and in the end returns to it.

But when Johnny's possible death becomes real, it starts pushing his limits. The people who are hard to anger are often the worst when they're pushed far enough. It's the same with Dally.

The overprotector is (quite obviously) overprotective, and overprotective is a pretty good adjective for Darry. He's constantly worrying about Ponyboy and Sodapop, because they're the only family he has left.

"'Where the heck have you been?...'
'Well, it's two in the morning, kiddo. Another hour and I would have had the police out after you. Where were you, Ponyboy?'
...
'I reckon it never occurred to you that your brother might be worrying their heads off and afraid to call the police because something like that could get you two thrown in a boys' home so quick it'd make your head spin...'" (50).

Darry is constantly worrying about his brothers, and whether or not they will be able to stay together. He's not only afraid that they are in danger, but that they might be take to a boy's home and separated.

Johnny has always idolized Dally, because he understands what Dally went through as a child better than anyone else. People who have similarities tend to connect better with one another than people who are opposites. Dally came to care about Johnny more than anyone else.

"'Dallas is gone,' I said. 'He ran out like the devil was after him. He's gonna blow up. He couldn't take it.'
How can I take it? I wondered. Dally is tougher than I am. Why can I take it when Dally can't? And then I knew. Johnny was the only thing Dally loved."

Johnny understood Dally better than anyone else. So many people who go through hard times have felt misunderstood, and all they want is to find someone who does understand them. Johnny understood why Dally was the way he was, and why he acted the way he acted. But with Johnny gone, Dally is all alone again, like he was in New York. He doesn't have anyone left who realizes what he's been through. He lost everyone he cared about before, and so he taught himself how not to care. Finally, he let himself love Johnny, and now Johnny's been taken from him like almost everything else in his life has been.

He loves action more than observing, and is much more into doing than thinking. He's a risk-taker, and well known for his sociable and reckless behavior. Dally's a bit more for facts than opinions, can often rush others into decisions and situations. He's has humor, and is would be the life of a party. He's always ready for new things, and is always defiant of the law. People with the character of an entrepreneur are hands-on, and interactive. They innovative, and don't like inactivity. An entrepreneur is never boring, as they're always on the move and looking for something new to try. Dally's also well known, with a habit for only being satisfied or convinced when he's learned for himself. He's more the type to learn through experience than through information and statistics. And entrepreneur looks for thrill and adrenaline. Their actions are spontaneous and impulsive. They are calm, casual, and live for their own entertainment and enjoyment. Dally, like an entrepreneur, thinks more about the present than the future, and he lives for the moment. He focuses on the problems at hand rather than those to come. His attitude is relaxed and nonchalant. Entrepreneurs are capable of improvising and love being in the thick of the action. Rules and restrictions are unnecessary and unwanted by entrepreneurs, and Dally especially. They have good coordination, reaction, and are physically fit. They make their surroundings exciting and everything they do is fun-filled and crazy. Entrepreneurs are all for experimenting with new, wild, and unheard ideas. They despise the mundane and plain things, and are enthusiastic about adventure and new experiences. An entrepreneur is used to socializing and love talking to and exciting others about things. The reckless and ambitious character of an entrepreneur is often found attractive and charming by the majority of people. Entrepreneurs live for thrill, and can help others around them feel the same way. The character of entrepreneur definitely defines Dally.

A dynamo, like Dally, loves fast paces and prefer humor over seriousness or emotion. Dynamos are generally physically fit and have high coordination and reaction. They focus on action and the present. They're logical and can stay calm and use their logic in emergencies. Dally, like other dynamos, like testing their talents and pushing their limits, always willing to do the daring and the dangerous. A dynamo is also capable of rubbing off their reckless and daredevil nature onto the people they're around. They like action and extremes, like skydiving and bungee or cliff jumping.

The old church is one of the most important settings in the entire book. Dally sends Johnny and Ponyboy to the old church after Johnny kills Bob when he and his friends are trying to drown Ponyboy. They have hide in the church for a week before Dally visits them, and Johnny decides he's going to turn himself in. As they pass by the church, they see it's on fire, and realize one of their cigarettes must have started it. They get out and see that a class of kids were having a picnic nearby. It turns out that some kids were playing in the church and are now trapped inside. Ponyboy goes in an Johnny goes in with him. They save the kids, but Johnny is hit by flaming debris on his way out, and Dally has to go it to save Johnny. Ponyboy's burns aren't bad, and Dally heals eventually, but Johnny is severely burned, and his back in also injured. Eventually, Johnny dies, and Dally breaks. Dally commits suicide by making the cops think he was threatening people with a gun, but it wasn't loaded. If they hadn't passed the old church when day it was burning, the kids would have died, and both Johnny and Dally would have lived. Both Dally and Johnny's deaths have a large impact on their whole gang.

There's a subtle ominous feeling that S.E. Hinton builds up before Johnny and Ponyboy meet the Socs in the park, possibly all the way from chapter 2, if Two-Bit's teasing of Johnny and Ponyboy (and Johnny's reaction) can count as foreshadowing.

"We were all four sitting there in silence when suddenly a strong hand came down on Johnny's shoulder and another on mine and a deep voice said, 'Okay, greasers, you've had it.'
... Then I looked at Johnny. His eyes were shut and he was as white as a ghost. His breath was coming in smothered gasps. Two-Bit knew better than to scare Johnny like that" (27).

"Things gotta get better, I figured. They couldn't get worse. I was wrong.

Chapter 4
The park was about two blocks square, with a fountain in the middle and a swimming pool for the little kids. The pool was empty now in the fall, but the fountain was going merrily. Tall elm trees made the park shadowy and dark, and it would have been a good hangout, but we preferred our vacant lot, and the Shepard outfit liked the alleys down by the tracks, so the park was left to lovers and little kids" (52-53).

The first quote shows how Johnny reacts when he thinks he's about to be jumped or beat up by Socs. It could be considered foreshadowing for when they actually do get jumped by the Socs in the park.

In the second quote, Ponyboy (as the narrator), says he was thinking that things couldn't get worse, but then says that he was wrong. This suggests that something bad is about to happen, and especially after the near run-in with the Socs before, Ponyboy running out of the house, and it being 2:30 in the morning, when it's very dark, both the reader's and Ponyboy's nerves are on edge. At the start of the next chapter, it describes the fountain where Ponyboy is nearly drowned, and tells that neither their gang nor the Shepards' gang hangs out at that particular park. This suggests that neither group knows the park as well, and it's harder to escape out of somewhere that you're less familiar with. The foreshadowing helps build the suspense and ominous feeling the reader has, but in a quiet and subtle manner.

'The dreamer' is the perfect label for Ponyboy. Ponyboy is the reader and drawer in the gang. As the youngest, he is probably the most naive. He thinks about a better world and he works for it, which are somethings most of the older members of the gang stopped doing a long time before.

"Soda... never cracks a book at all, and my oldest brother... Darry, works too long and hard to be interested in a story or drawing a picture, so I'm not like them. And nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way I do." (1-2)

"Yet in his hard face there was character, pride, and a savage defiance of the world. .... It would be a miracle if Dally loved anything. The fight for self-preservation had hardened him beyond caring."

Ponyboy's different from the rest of the gang because he loves books, movies, and drawing. No one else really cares much for them, or understands why Ponyboy loves them so much. They typically have fiction in them, and Ponyboy seems to believe in something better. He thinks that life can get better, so he works hard in school and he's smart, because he wants that better future and better life.

The second quote is an example of how the others, especially Dally, have stopped believing in a better life. Some of them have experienced too much to still believe in a good future. They feel like what they've got now is all that they'll ever get, but Ponyboy believes differently. Ponyboy is a dreamer because he uses imagination, creativity, and he believes that there is something better.

Cherry is the peacemaker because she hates fights and doesn't like people getting hurt.

"'If you're looking for a fight...'
... 'You mean if I'm looking for a good jumping, you outnumber us, so you'll give it to us? Well...' ... 'Try it, pal.'
'No!' Cherry cried. 'Stop it!' She looked at Bob. 'We'll ride home with you. Just wait a minute.'
...
Cherry shuddered. 'I can't stand fights...I can't stand them...'" (45).

Cherry tries to keep the greasers and Socs from having to fight one another whenever possible. She's willing to act as a spy for the greasers and she tries to help Ponyboy understand what it's like and the difficulties the Socs face in their own class, and understanding is the key to peace.

The confident is a character that the main character is willing to confide in, and in The Outsiders, that character is Sodapop.

"Nobody but Soda could really get me talking" (39).

"Compared to Johnny's home, mine was heaven. At least Darry didn't get drunk and beat me up or run me out of the house, and I had Sodapop to talk things over with" (42).

Sodapop is that amazingly likeable character that all the other characters love and trust. Especially since he's Ponyboy's older brother, Pony really trust Soda, and Soda is always ready to listen to what Pony has to say. Sodapop is the fun-loving, joking, even-tempered kind of person, and he's kind to all his friends. Ponyboy is able to trust Soda and confide in him for these reasons, and Soda is able to confide in Ponyboy.
