Rice is the worlds second most produced staple crop. It accounts for one third of the planet's annual freshwater use (Moss, 2011). Additionally, the cost of producing rice and transporting it is expensive (Moss, 2011).
Due to the great need for rice, pesticides are used in the new rice production technologies. The pesticides harm the food chain, our water system, and the health of the farmers (Pierre & Catherine, 1999). The soil becomes contaminated with pesticides harming other crops and animals. The production of rice produces greenhouse gas emissions harming the environment (Pierre & Catherine, 1999).

References:
Moss, L., (2011). 12 foods that are bad for the planet. Mother Nature Network.
