North Korea remains arbitrarily divided from South Korea, dating back to its Soviet-backed establishment following World War 2. The "Hermit Kingdom" has fallen behind technologically and economically, in stark contrast to South Korea (who has flourished in the same time frame). The Korean War was never fully resolved, and heated tensions persist between American and North Korea to this day. Nuclear capabilities and the complicated political entanglements between America, China, Russia, North Korea, and South Korea continue to complicate matters. Though America desires a resolution to these issues and wants to de-escalate nuclear proliferation, there is no clear solution or end in sight.

The relationship between Iran and the United States dates back to as early as WWI, even time before that. Historically, the relations between the two countries was quite one sided in some ways. Ultimately, the US had little interest in Persian affairs, while US as a trustworthy outsider did not suffer. The Persians again sought the US for help in straightening out its finances after World War I. This mission unlike the last was opposed by powerful vested interests and eventually it was withdrawn with its task incomplete. Following this there was no special US concern with Iran or any interaction until World War II. As of now, in most recent news, sources such as the New York Times are claiming there are new tensions with Iran because of the nuclear deal- as Iran is threatening to bomb our military. My padlet dives into concepts like these, especially the nuclear weapons, and its effect on the relations between the two countries.

The article gave a lot of information about the physical setting, a sketch, the relation between the U.S. and North Korea, the nuclear proliferation and more. It was very interesting to read about how North Korea started the divide with the Korean Peninsula to the information about the Korean War. Another very interesting fact that the article gave was about the crazy advancement of the North Koreans design facilities that produce weapons and how they are able to bomb faster than otherwise assumed. With the great frustration and ironic situation between the United States and North Korea all Americans want to do is make it go away.

Before reading this article I thought I knew enough about North Korea, I learned a lot about its history in general as well as its relationship with the United States. North Korea and its divided half, the south, share so many distinctions. From their economy, politics, and lifestyle, you see a vast difference. Many have felt that unifying both sides would be the solution to drastically improve North Korea's poverty seeing as the south is so bountiful but that option has since been dismissed after both sides have met about it. Because North Korea lives in such a hard dictatorship and is such a small country compared to its neighbors, i.e. Japan, Russia and China, nuclear weapons are a way for them assert power which is why they have threatened to remove their membership from every agreement (Nuclear Non-Proliferation, Framework agreement) with the U.S. against using nuclear weapons. In America's efforts to fix this situation, it is likely North Korea will remain as is in favor of their nuclear power.

It has been very important to the US, to kind of have a check on North Korea just in case things go south with them. They have been unpredictable and as long as they have a negative relationship with other countries, it is imperative to be ready for them at all times. Nuclear weapons are not be joked about. A lot of people in this have actually been terrified of a nuclear attack on their city from Kim Jong Un.

This article explains basically the whole deal with North Korea and why they are so important. Pretty much the only reason that North Korea even is mentioned when considering the superpowers of the world is because of its possession of nuclear weapons. It wasn't until 2006 that North Korea became the 9th Nuclear power with when they obtained 6 of 8 primitive, low-yield warheads. North Korean leaders leave their citizens to starve to death and isolate them from the rest of the world so that they are not aware of a better life, in fact the country is so isolated that there is no legal access to the internet. My story board gives a good summary of the situation with Korea including information on the Korean War and why Korea divided in the first place.

https://padlet.com/joeandkristiefleming/m8arebbkp2ke

North Korea and South Korea, although similar in cultural have so many strong distinctions that it is actually ironic, how two places so close and with such close history can be so distinct from each other. Many believe by combining both sides, there can help provided to poverty in North Korea and this is the ulimate answer to all of North Korea’s problem. Compared to the North, South Korea has a booming economy with great freedom and beauty. However, both sides have met up concerning this issue and it seems that both have decided to not go through. Further, as North Korea’s size is much smaller than neighboring nations, nuclear weapons have provied them with an upper hand to the whole situation. They have threatened to use their nuclear power and break through agreements, which is one of America’s top concerns. I believe that combing the two countries would benefit the North but can only be done by the downfall of the dictator.

This is probably the most interesting and inquisitive article and chapter of this information I have ever read. The interest went so deep that it was hard to not function on an aspect that was more important than the other. It was very overpowering to find out that we have a twin on the other side of the world that needs us as much as we need it.

I've heard many different things this past year about China's expansion both domestically and internationally, and how it has the United States worried; that's why I was so interested to read this article. A lot of relations between the US and China boils down to China being communist and America's responsibility to contain communism and stop it from spreading to the free world.

I really focused on the main points that had caused their relationship to change along with the status of their relationship today.

https://padlet.com/crystaldinh333/mxbmydvjttg8

This article covers the complicated relationship and history of the Korea's and the United States. From the separation of the once united Korea after WWII to the present day North and South Korea. The present states were heavily influenced by Soviet and United States occupying during the cold war. It has greatly influenced how the states are run now. One quote that stood out to me was:

"There is also an expanding capitalist economy in the south - underdeveloped economy in socialist north."

Overall this article explains in detail the relationship of North Korea and the US through several presidential administrations as well as highlights the purposes of nuclear weapons.
