Hey there! I'm Ife Gregory Onianwa. Fun fact: my dad gave me the middle name Gregory after his best friend, and my first name, Ife, is Nigerian—it means "What God has written, no one can erase." Pretty cool, right?

Now, when life gets stressful, some people meditate or go for a run. Me? I bake cakes! It’s my go-to stress buster, a sweet skill I picked up from my mom. And yep, I'm proudly Nigerian by birth, which makes me feel even more connected to my roots.

It is celebrated to honor the goddess Durga who defeated the buffalo demon called Mahishasura. It serves as a reminder to people that good always prevails over evil. The festival includes elaborate rituals, beautifully decorated pandals (temporary structures), cultural performances, and community feasting.

The New Yam Festival, or Iri Ji, is like the ultimate harvest party in Nigeria, especially for the Igbo people. Picture this: a massive food fest where yams are the VIPs, and the whole community gathers to celebrate. The festival kicks off when the village chief, or Igwe, slices the first yam, blessing the harvest and ensuring good vibes for the year ahead. After that, it’s all about feasting, with roasted, boiled, or pounded yams taking center stage. Think of it as Thanksgiving, but with yams and way more dancing!

And it’s not just about eating. The festival is packed with music, cultural dances, and the famous Mmanwu masquerades—those spooky yet fun masked figures that everyone loves (and sometimes runs from!). It’s a time for everyone to dress in their freshest traditional attire, squash old beefs, and celebrate unity and abundance. The New Yam Festival is the perfect mix of food, culture, and good vibes—like a cultural reset with yams as the star!

Kamayan is a Filipino tradition meaning "to eat with your hands". It involves a super long table that is covered in banana-leaf, where various Filipino food is placed on. Family and friends would eat around this table, typically only using their hands, grabbing only what they want to eat. Food around the table may vary, but usually, foods such as barbecue, fish, rice, and fruit are very common to be found in a kamayan. Ultimately, Kamayan brings family's and loved ones together with a shared meal, eaten in a manner that shows inclusiveness.

It revolves around two sticks, each held at both sides by two people. the stick is bounced on the ground following a beat and the sticks close together every three bounces. There are dancers in the center who can freestyle or dance in a more traditional, elegant way while dancing over the moving sticks. More pairs of sticks are added for an extra challenge or to incorporate more dancers.

The region where I live is known as "El Llano," which comes from the word "llanura," meaning plain, due to the flat terrain without mountains or elevated land. In this region, it's very hot, and the culture is very cowboy-like. In the towns, there are many farms where they raise cattle and ride horses. I really love this region because it is very rural, and you can appreciate beautiful landscapes.

Its role in society, however, has changed over time, and today it is one of the UAE’s most honoured traditional sports. Falconry’s revered status derives from the sense of courage, honour and nobility – prized traditional Arab values – that are associated with the sport, as well as its links to nature conservation, respect for animals and the comradery among falconers.

Coleo is the most famous traditional sport in the Llanos region, and it has been practiced for a long time. Its origins go back to when the cowboys of the time would ride horses to chase down bulls that had escaped from the herd. As they developed different techniques, they realized it was easier to bring down the bulls by pulling them by the tail. What began as a necessity turned into a competition among fellow cowboys, and eventually, this practice spread to Venezuela. Over time, it became a recognized sport in the region.

Today, the sport is endorsed by various coleo federations, both in Venezuela and Colombia. The current format involves a group of four participants competing one-on-one, each riding a horse and attempting to bring down a bull or steer on a 150-meter-long track. Points are awarded based on how the animal is brought down and the distance at which it happens.

Coleo is deeply rooted in local culture, but it has become somewhat controversial today because it involves the use of animals. Modern regulations place a strong emphasis on animal welfare, imposing penalties for intentional mistreatment or improper takedowns, and ensuring that animals receive medical care in case of an emergency. Despite these measures, some people oppose the practice and suggest that the sport should be banned. But, well, that’s a debate for another time, hehe
