This illustration by Favre is was created for the cover of a Metropolitan Spread on the ‘enigmatic genius’ Martin Marginal.

A principle the artist has employed within this artwork is contrast. Favre expertly juxtaposes light and dark, bold and delicate; vibrant and muted tones to create a dynamic and eye-catching illustration. This contrast adds depth and visual interest to her piece making it visually engaging and captivating.

Favre also incorporates the principle of rhythm in her illustration. Through the repetition of shapes, patterns, and colours, she creates a sense of movement and harmony within her piece. This rhythmic quality adds a dynamic element to her work enhancing the overall visual experience.

The reason I can appreciate this specific piece of the artists work is because of the use of high contrasting colours creates a boldness that demands the gaze from the viewer. With the principle of shape and rhythm in combination with the contrast, it really allows the eye to follow all the way through the illustration.

This cover illustration was done for Arab News in celebration of the end of the Saudi Arabians ban on women driving.

This piece also comes in an animation format that features the landscape view in the eyewear moving with the theoretical vehicle the character is driving along with the clothing shifting as if there was a gentle breeze.
This allows for the viewer to understand the sense of freedom that was felt across Saudi Arabia as the ban on driving against women was lifted.

What sets Favre apart from other artists is her ability to merge different artistic disciplines, such as graphic design, illustration. Her artwork seamlessly combines these elements to create visually stunning and visually communicative pieces.

Additionally, Favre demonstrates a keen understanding of the principle of emphasis. She skillfully directs the viewer's attention to specific focal points within her compositions, using bold lines, vibrant colors, and strategic placement to draw the eye. This emphasis creates a sense of hierarchy and guides the viewer's gaze, allowing them to fully appreciate and interpret the intended message of the artwork.

This artwork appeals to me because of the underlying meaning behind it. Favre has used her skills of artistic expression to invoke the feeling of freedom and relief I assume many Saudi Arabians felt when the driving ban was lifted. Now the viewer can see this artwork and not only imagine what it would be like to experience what is demonstrated but it can now be a reality to them if they wish.

My Response

In my response to Favre’s artwork, I wanted to create the very bold-high contrast style that she is known for. I also attempted to incorporate the use of the movement with the use of shape placement.

In addition, I wanted to have a strong narrative portrayed within the artwork like Favre did with the cover of Arab News. With this in mind the Tarantino Film Kill Bill came to mind. The film itself is a high regard of artistic skill and I thought the combination of both graphic illustration and film could mesh together well and create the desired piece I was aiming for.

I feel as though the artwork came out well and demonstrates a clear response to Favre work, however why I would do differently is perhaps create an illustration that includes more perspective within in the artwork in order to guide the viewers eye line.
