~ Commonly known as the Water Festival, Thingyan is Burmese New Year celebration celebrated in early Spring based on lunisolar calendar. During this time, ပိတောက်, the Padauk (Burmese national flower) comes into full blooms on the streets filled with splashing of water and laughter.  As a child, eating
မုန့်လုံးရေပေါ်  (Mote Lone Yay Baw) after an intensive water fight was my very favorite thing to do.
This New Year tradition is observed by many Southeast Asian countries including but not limited to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. Like many new year festivals, Thingyan is cancelled due to the pandemic. But there is no better way to welcome 2020 than to celebrate at home in solidarity with the rest of the world!
