recently had a Spanish teacher (white, upper middle class, Jewish, American-born, able bodied) in Miami say that she wouldn't feel able to teach in a place like Overtown that is all students of color. she wouldn't be prepared or comfortable or something like that. It made me feel uncomfortable and I think I said different school setting can be for different educators, but obviously those students are just as capable and smart and deserve joy too. If she is admitting a bias already, she probably shouldn't be teaching there anyway (I guess?)

On a flight from Puerto Rico, I witnessed an encounter between a flight attendant and two passengers in the exit row. The flight attendant asked everyone if they are willing to help in an emergency. When one of the passengers didn't reply, she asked, "Don't you speak English?" When the passengers son replied that his father doesn't but he can translate, the flight attendant sighed and said, "He can't sit here if he doesn't speak English" and got another person to come and translate in Spanish. She made them both switch with me and another passenger. Although it is a rule that passengers who sit in the exit row have to speak English on US flights, considering this was from Puerto Rico, this struck me as linguistic racism and felt uncomfortable with how the flight attendant was diminishing the Spanish language.

Linguicism was something new for me that I’ve learned the name for this year, and now that I know it I realize how much it came up. I see it in day to day interactions everywhere. I think one way I see it most often is in navigating systems. I remember a friend asking me to call her mother’s doctor for her because I didn’t have an accent, and knew the dominant culture language well enough to say to get her medication reinstated. I see it at HGSE all the time, as we decide who has an accent based on our own definitions of what a language should sound like. I saw it in my previous context too, where families wouldn’t teach their children their own language so they could speak English without an accent, even if it meant they could no longer speak with their own child.

Trying to communicate with close family members is always a fight that seems like a win in the moment, and then a few months later, we're having the same fight/conversation. Do I just let it go? Do I try a new approach every time? I feel frustrated having the same talk over and over and not feeling heard. When I choose to ignore the comments and protect my spirit in the moment, I feel guilty for not fighting for my values rooted in dismantling oppression.

I was a sophomore in college working in an elementary classroom as a teacher assistant in a classroom in Lewiston, Maine. There is a large amount of Somali students in the Lewiston school district. That day, the teacher was out and there was a substitute teacher. The students were working on math during class. At the end of class, the substitute teacher came over to me to ask how the group of students I was working with went. When I told her that there was confusion about a particular math concept among the group, she said "I bet it was those Somali students, they just don't seem to get anything." She made an assumption and presented language that was so harmful and deficit based. I am ashamed that I did not tell the teacher how harmful her language was.
