“Throughout the didactic sequence the teacher plays an important role at the beginning when according to his initial observations, he can elaborate and adapt the different workshops to the students’ needs and abilities. Some of the questions he should face beforehand are: what are the objectives of the didactic sequence? How do the workshops constitute a progression of interrelated activities which reinforce and consolidate each other in establishing the final outcome? In this way, the teacher has the opportunity to individualize the work students do and monitor their progress. At this stage, his role as a teacher is more of a guide leading students through their learning and letting them use the language creatively to write their stories” (Reyes et al., 2012, p. 15).

Reading through this article definitely helped me process the project we’ve just finished and reframe it in ways that can be beneficial to students. I think Reyes, Pich and Garcia make a great point about how the teacher’s observations and initial intentions for the project play an important role in how the over all project is carried out by the students. The stronger those foundations the clearer the objectives will be to the students themselves. Students require clarity in order to have a sense of what they’re doing, and more importantly, why they’re doing it. This type of understanding lends itself to what motivates students in their work. Giving students the reigns over the content of their digital stories by giving them a strong grip of the tools, resources, and skill sets they need to in order to meet their own story objectives places the creative control where it should be. In the hands of the storytellers.

References:

Reyes, A., Pich, E., and García, M.D. (2012).
