Wish You Were was more interesting to me. This was written by Claire G. Coleman. This book was quite interesting because what would happen if you woke up one morning and had no control over what you were doing. This is quite interesting to me.

How did this text challenge or expand your understanding of the future?

This text challenges my understanding of the future because I had to think of somebody else who had control over my every move and being able to be 'me' online. It made me think about problems I could face in the future. It expanded my understanding of the future because it made me realise that I will always have to stay cautious when I am entering details onto websites.

Did this text raise any questions, excitement, or uncertainties about the future?

Which types of mentor texts did you engage with this week? Which one was the most interesting to you?

This week I engaged with the Flash Forward podcast. This podcast was titled 'Tree Free'. The podcast was basically about what life would be like without trees in the future and having no more paper if technology fails later on. This was interesting to me because it made me see what paper and our trees contribute to humanity's survival.

How did this text challenge or expand your understanding of the future?

This text challenged my understanding of the future because I assumed that humans would switch gradually from paper to technology, however this text proves that paper is always a very good backup and very important to human survival. This mentor text also expanded my understanding of the future as it made me realise that there should always be a plan B, because sometimes, new technology can be more unreliable than we initially realise.

Did this text raise any questions, excitement, or uncertainties about the future? If so, what are they?

This text raised an uncertainty about the future because I would still like to still have trees, and if humans don't have trees in the future, this can lead to big problems for the next generations.

Which types of mentor texts did you engage with this week? Which one was the most interesting to you?

This week we started to look at the non-fiction side of mentor texts. This began with a non-fiction report called "Eco-anxiety is a normal response to disaster. Denial isn't the answer" by Shanti Mathias. The next mentor texts I looked at was the speeches by Barack Obama and Greta Thunberg. The next mentor text I read was 'Australia is facing a moment of truth' by Professor John Shine. Finally, I looked at the essay section of non-fiction. The essay was 'After the Future' by Tim Flannery. The mentor text I found most interesting is 'After the Future' by Tim Flannery.

How did this text challenge or expand your understanding of the future?

This text challenged my understanding of the future because I thought that in Australia, the plants and animals that are native to Australia would not be going extinct within the near future. If citizens of Australia don't protect the lands, then these endangered animals would go extinct. The text expanded my understanding of the future because it made me realise that keeping our animals alive and not endangered is a priority.

Did this text raise any questions, excitement, or uncertainties about the future? If so, what are they?

This text raised an uncertainty about the future as I did not realise that so many animals and plants in Australia are endangered and on the brink of extinction. This raised a question with me, because we need to protect our vital ecosystems, and if we do not, what would life look like? Or, Can we still maintain a good and fulfilled life if we destroy these ecosystems?

Which types of mentor texts did you engage with this week? Which one was the most interesting to you? - I engaged with an episode of the show Black Mirror, it was called Hated in the Nation. This was a visual text written by Charlie Brooker and directed by James Hawes.

How did this text challenge or expand your understanding of the future? - I thought about how it was really interesting little robot bees had been created to replace the real bees due to colony collapse - this seemed first like a really cool way to fix the problem if we really didn't have bees due to environmental concerns. However, my opinion quickly changed when I realised that of course people were going to be under surveillance by the government with a program like that and that's a bit of a scary thought.

Did this text raise any questions, excitement, or uncertainties about the future? If so, what are they? It made me think about the way that the internet is going to evolve. It seemed strange that even in a 'futuristic' show like Black Mirror, there were still things like twitter and cancel culture that existed. It makes me wonder about whether there might end up being serious consequences to 'cancelling' someone online in the future. I'm also even more uncertain about what the environment might look like now because I thought the episode would look way more futuristic and houses would be more automated but things are kind of still looking the same.

Which types of mentor texts did you engage with this week? Which one was the most interesting to you?

I engaged with 3 mentor texts this week. They were 'Nuclear Semiotics' by Harry Choi, 'The Lottery' by Shirley Jackson and 'The Arborist' by Leon Furze. Nuclear Semiotics was a conspiracy piece, which made me think how will the future people view different concepts we have today. The other two were fiction pieces. The most interesting piece to me was 'The Lottery' because it was like a movie I had watched, the Hunger Games.

How did this text challenge or expand your understanding of the future?

This text challenged my understanding of the future, because when I think about the future, I think of a utopian setting where everything is bright and cheery. However, in this mentor text, Shirley Jackson writes about a dystopian future where the characters participate in a 'lottery' and the unlucky winner gets stoned to death, just so the rest of the village can have a good harvest this year. It is almost like a sacrificial offering to the gods for food to eat in the upcoming year. It expanded my knowledge because it showed me the different possibilities of what the future can look like.

Did this text raise any questions, excitement, or uncertainties about the future? If so, what are they?

This text raised some uncertainties about the future because, this is what the future generations could be living like, a lot like the hunger games where they are fighting for their survival. It raised a question to me where society developed backwards with none of the new technology to rely on food growth for the crops, just an offering. Human sacrifices have been outlawed and are no longer legal.
