Napoleon forced the royals of Portugal to go to Brazil which was one of their colonies. The king wanted to stay back in Brazil after Napoleon was defeated but the people made him go back home to rule Portugal from Portugal. He left his son Pedro in charge on Brazil when he left. After a few years the people of Brazil, being unhappy with their status as a colony of Portugal, convinced Prince Pedro to declare Brazil an independent country in 1822.

The first uprising of slaves was lead by Vincent Ogé who was unsuccessful and was captured and executed by the French in 1790. In 1793 a man named Léger-Félicité Sonthonax from France was asked to maintain order so he offered freedom to slaves who joined his army. He soon abolished slavery altogether which the French government backed. Later in the 1790's a slave by the name of Toussaint Louverture took over parts of Haiti including Saint Domingue the capital but was arrested and killed. His lieutenants Jean Jacques Dessalines and Henry Christophe finished freeing Haiti from the French in 1804 after his death.

People of color were not treated fairly in Haiti before the revolution and half a million of them were slaves. Some of these slaves managed to escape and held a voodoo service where they decided to start an uprising. Thousands of people of color became part of this arm so France sent someone over to try and make peace with them. France ended up freeing the slaves and using them to help fight against the British and Spanish rebels. Once they were defeated French troops returned to France to fight with Napoleon leaving a black man in charge who eventually declared Haiti an independent nation in 1804.

After the defeat of Napoleon a strong sense of nationalism was developed in Germany and the collection of states wanted to become a country. The two most powerful states began fighting over who would lead this new empire. Prussia was led by prime minister Otto von Bismarck who was appointed by the king.
