A New Perspective by Janice E. Fein Synopsis

I connected really well with Janice E. Fein's essay because it speaks to the idea that it is through a change in perspective that allows events to be better understood. The essay speaks to the idea that Janice felt cheated as a child because of her mothers illness, but didn't fully understand at that time, that she was not the one who had been cheated. Her perspective had changed drastically once she became a mother. She then realized it wasn't the child who was cheated, it was the mother whois missing out on her child's life.

I believe the the intent of this essay is to point out that when you allow yourself to step into the shoes of others, figuratively and literally, you can then understand the perspective of others, rather than just yourself. In Janice's position, she had to literally step into her mothers shoes. When that happened, she was able to feel epithetic towards her mother knowing that she was the one who was cheated because she was the one unable to actively be in her daughters life.

Ultimately, it is important to thoroughly examine from all perspectives before concluding anything, especially when it's with something so important and personal. This can present to be tough, especially at a young age, but it is doable. I would agree this is what happened with me and my relationship with my mother. I changed my thoughts once I was able to see things from her perspective, we weren't the ones being nearly as hurt as she was. Her being has always been about her children and suddenly she no loner had them because of something that was out of her control. I feel I should have been more supportive during this time and less judgmental.

Janice E. Fein's essay A New Perspective, is a piece of writing I can relate to. When I was 14 my mother was involved in a serious motorcycle accident where she almost lost her life. At the time, she was a single mother trying to raise 4 of us, but after the accident she rarely got out of bed and was severely depressed which left me to take care of my younger siblings. Eventually, my two younger brothers moved away to live with their dad because that is what was best. This destroyed my mother and she started heavily drinking. This was all very difficult for me to deal with at the time as family was everything to me and I grew up having a very close relationship with my mother.

I spent a lot of time being angry towards my mother, blaming her for our family no longer being a family. Shortly after by brothers left, my sister moved away and then I. I was 16 when I moved out of my mothers house and in with another family in the community, the Northey's. Jackie Northey helped me work through a lot of things, never once did she make me feel she was "on my side"but helped me better understand the events that took place. My relationship with my mother greatly improved and since she has gotten back together with my younger brothers father and had another baby.
