This reveals that not only does Ishmael now feel he had a new family within his squad, but it also shows that he has had a change of attitude due to the war.  Once an innocent young child wanting nothing but to be safe with his family and nothing to do with the war.  Ishmael now wants to be on the battle field being involved in the war and killing rebels.  This change most likely occurred due to hate, vengeance for his family, and being surrounded by killing.
