         <title>William Shafter</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Shafter was born in 1835 and died in 1906 ("William Shafter").</li><li>In 1898 he became the general of volunteers and gained command  of the Fifth Corps ("William Shafter").</li><li>On July 1st, Shafter ordered the attack on San Juan Hill (History.com staff).</li><li>He wanted to capture the village of El Caney before advancing onto San Juan Hill (History.com staff).</li><li>They were getting defeated there because the Spanish had 10 times more than we had (History.com staff). </li><li>Shafter got sick with gout from fighting on the hill and in the city (“William Shafter”).</li><li>Since he was sick with gout and could not command, he waited until Santiago surrendered (“William Shafter”).</li><li>Some of his underlings told the press that he was not able to lead the troops in the Battle of Santiago (“William Shafter”).</li><li>On October 3rd Shafter proclaimed his disbanding (“William Shafter”).</li><li>Shafter wanted to attack the day after the battles and take the whole city but he could not because he was sick (“William Shafter”).</li></ul><div><br></div><div>William Rufus Shafte.jpg, by Econrad~commonswiki, public domain</div>]]></description>
