Up to ages 6 or 7, before my formal education - my parents were the main source of learning experiences. It seems the purpose in their eyes was to teach me emotional self awareness and responsibility (especially nurturing love and understanding of myself and others), structure (through discipline and chores), social maturity, health and coordination, creativity, and basic academic skills.

I would conclude that their conscious and unconscious goals were accomplished. I feel upon starting school I was a well rounded child with many experiences who carried an open mind and kind heart. I feel I was strong in all fore-mentioned areas except for structure. I had a very happy and care free early childhood experience.

Looking back, the way my parents were in early childhood development has greatly impacted how I view education. I believe that having academic abilities and structure is important, but that having self awareness and critical thinking skills is often not given enough credit. Having an open mind, and a nurtured and kind heart is beneficial for academic learning. It is also beneficial for many social and emotional aspects that are more than helpful for navigating life.

I went to Roseburg High School. It seems the purpose of High School was to prepare me for adult life and to teach more problem solving, critical thinking, and knowledge in general. Teaching one about adult life meant that there was more personal responsibility and consequences for one's actions. What we did in High School affected our possibilities for college and we were learning skills we would be taking into the next stages of life. With the excitement of more freedom and social experiences came the reality of the pressures and stresses of life.

I would say that Roseburg High School did a great job at preparing me for adult life - as best as they really could. Though I was encouraged to do well and informed of the rewards and consequences of my actions, I was given the freedoms to make my own choices. This resulted in learning about the excitement of what I can do with my own potentials, as well as the anxieties caused by lack of responsibility. All and all - High School remained interesting and fun, further developing my academic and critical thinking skills, as well as, teaching me that my real life actions now have real life results.

High School influenced my views on the impact of education much like Middle School, with a few differences. There was much more freedom and responsibility given academically and socially. This required me to manage my own time and priorities - to succeed and at times to fail. It was also a time when grades and activities were given real significance to my future prospects.

I attended Jo Lane Middle School. Middle School seemed to combine elements of Elementary School and High School. It's goals were to provide new academic experiences and perspectives, as well as more mature social development. To further develop knowledge, academic skills, and creativity. To begin to show the value of education in preparation for real life and to teach more personal responsibility.

I feel as though Middle School achieved it's goals. Though I may have given social experiences more attention than was necessary, I still very much loved learning and remember being excited for the personal freedoms and responsibilities I was provided. As well as further developing knowledge and academic skills - I learned more about personal responsibility. In other words - homework. I also learned about the importance of education for my future both financially, and through having a career in something I enjoy or am passionate about. Social development didn't seem to be openly taught, but rather it was something I learned about through experience (other than treating others with respect).

This time period impacted my view on education in some new ways - above all else the independence and new responsibilities were eye opening and exciting. Taking responsibility for work and study outside of school hours was influential to my development as a person and as a student. It was scary, and it was exciting - much as life as an adult.

I went to Winchester Elementary, GO BRAVES! (Now the Wolves). It seems the purpose of Elementary school was to gain basic knowledge, develop problem solving skills, creativity, academic skills, and socialization skills.

I believe the outcome was successful. I enjoyed learning and feel I finished grade school with a strong understanding of basic knowledge. My problem solving and creativity skills were encouraged and developed in fun and challenging ways. My academic skills were also encouraged through praise, competition, and pride in my abilities. Socialization skills were often developed on their own due to the social environment - However conflict resolution, teamwork, and more were taught and helped mold my social skills.

Grade school impacted my views in education in a variety of fundamental ways. The joy of learning and creativity was encouraged. Pride and even competition was developed and valued. Teamwork and caring for others was also important. I see now how important many subtle aspects of school are and were.

I chose not to attend college after graduating from High School. I instead entered the work force and pursued personal travel, musical, science/nature, philosophical, and spiritual interests. Though there was little to no formal education during this time I will discuss what was learned in my work experience and private studies.

I have had many jobs from physical labor to customer service. My experiences in landscaping and home construction/remodel taught me about how to take care of and improve my hypothetical future home. There is a lot of handy work and yard work in which I am now comfortably knowledgeable. I also learned work ethic, the importance of taking care of my health, researching, and working on a team/following instructions. My experiences and training in customer service taught me about handling conflicts, researching, problem solving, teaching, training, and working on a team/following instructions.

My personal interests in travel, music, science/nature, philosophy, and spirituality have greatly affected my life orientation and quality. I have spent great amounts of time researching, contemplating, and attempting to express and embody my studies. These experiences are what I believe have nurtured my greatest personal growths in life. Without going into great detail - they have provided understanding, peace, and perspective that have served me well and that I continue to develop.

This time of my life impacted my views on education in a few surprising ways. I both sought out personal interests and developed my own values, as well as understood the consequences of not following the structured paths provided to me earlier. I had to, and continue to balance what I value most in these regards.

My greatest learning experiences have been as a father in the last 8 or 9 years. As well as continued education from work, I have learned and continue to learn about parenting.

Being a parent has taught me true humility and about my limitations. I have learned about myself and have also read and researched about parenting philosophies and child psychology. What has impacted me the most has been through my personal parenting experiences and observations.

Parenting has likely provided the greatest shifts in my views on education - as I contemplate my son's opportunities in much more depth than I considered my own. I explore many perspectives and hope for a great quality of life and satisfaction for him. Above all else I want him to have many options and opportunities available. I am also much more thankful and at times critical of the education and social systems. I will never be the same and don't think I will every stop developing my interests in human life.
