Giotto focused more on the authenticity of what reactions real people would have. Making his work seem real. This focus on realism transferred over when he was creating anything such as a landscape. His goal was to make it a real as possible.

The registers are in three rows, which tells a story. One being Christ's grandparents, Joachim and Anne on the right wall, and on the left Mary. Second we see the Life of Christ. Lastly on the bottom, the Passion of Christ. 

What might be the symbolism of the tree? 

The tree is the rooting of the figures in the scene (Painting), and also the tree is on one of the highest points, which leads to Christ.
