Knowledge is power. Generally, if someone has more knowledge than another, then they are granted greater power if they desire it. In Shakespeare's play The Tempest, the magical creature Ariel does not desire great power but holds enough knowledge and magical power that if he wanted more control, he could have it. Contrary to this, the ruler of the island (the main setting of the play), Prospero, holds power in many forms (magic, status, and knowledge), and he desires control, so he gets it. Ariel gives up the ultimate power to Prospero, so he is enslaved and Prospero is his master. Ariel claims that he "will be correspondent to command / And do [his] spriting gently" and according to Prospero's demands (Shakespeare 1.2.353-354). In this case, similar to many, desired control can be obtained rather easily when someone holds power in many forms, and especially in the form of knowledge.

Different perspectives cause individuals to act differently in similar situations. In The Tempest, an example of this is seen when the audience analyzes the father/daughter duo, Prospero and Miranda. The events of Act 1, Scene 2 of the play explain how Miranda is rather ignorant of her circumstances in comparison to her father who knows well of his surroundings. Miranda is willing to jump into any desirable situation in front of her at first glance, while the educated Prospero knows it is best to first test the waters. When a man by the name of Ferdinand washes up on the island the father and daughter live on, Miranda seems to think she's instantly fallen in love. It is revealed to the audience that Ferdinand is "the third man that" Miranda has ever seen in her life, yet she believes she's fallen in love after just seeing him (Shakespeare 1.2.535). Her father, however, knows a person cannot commit their life to another without knowing one another a respectable amount. So, he puts the two, Miranda and Ferdinand, through a series of tests against their relationship and knowledge of one another. The perspectives of both the father and daughter are different from one another for various reasons, the most significant being knowledge and life experience. While they are both involved in the same event, the perspective of each character is different which causes them to react differently to what is ahead of them.
