<title>Over the last two years, our professional development has taught us to view our classroom from a learning perspective. The learning is communicated to the students through Focus Questions that allows them to better internalize the daily learning. They also allow us to create activities that are directly related to the learning and creates context and relevance to the learning. Further &quot;breaking down &quot; of the Focus Questions into &quot;Scaffolding Questions&quot; has improved our ability to formatively assess with a keener focus on the learning. </title>

<title>We learned what focus questions are and how to use them to enforce a student&#39;s learning and help them answer the question &quot;what did you learn today?&quot; The second inservice is deliberately connecting and providing focus questions that they can relate to themselves and the big picture of what we want them to learn. The third inservice was comparing focus vs. essential questions and their practical application in the classroom. In other words, create an entrance for everyone, remind them often, use them as an assessment at the end. If they understand what the learning is then they are more likely to reach the goal. </title>

<title>The overarching theme of professional development over the past two years has been planning for learning. Among the tools that we have discussed are the use of essential questions, focus questions, and formative assessment. All planning needs to be relevant to and accessible by all of the students. Most importantly, planning needs to focus on what students are learning and not what they are doing. Engaging students in a vision of learning begins with a teacher who believes that it is in the best interest of students to share authority. </title>
