In 1940, Freddie Oversteegen was only 14 years old when she joined the Dutch resistance during World War 2. Freddie along with her sister Truus Oversteegen, both grew up in the city of Haarlem with a single, working-class mother. Their mother always taught her daughters the importance of fighting injustice. Together, Freddie, Truus and later, a younger woman named Hannie Schaft-- the trio lured, ambushed and killed German Nazi and their dutch collaborators.

The sister's then dealt with the trauma of killing people and losing their best friend (Hannie Schaft). Freddie coped "by getting married and having babies", according to what she said. However, experience from the war still caused her insomnia. Freddie explained how she had seen a person she shot fall to the ground. Both women died at the age 92-- Truus in 2016, and Freddie on September 5, 2018, a day before she turned 93. In 2014, they received a national recognition for their service.
