Scientists know about organisms that lived in ancient times by looking at fossils. There are many different fossils out there, however, the lower you go, the more ancient it gets. For example, they have several different fossils of horses, and that’s how they can figure out how horses formed and changed over time. Same goes for penguins, with the ancient fossil of Pedro, and the present species. There are differences in the number of bones, the shape of the bone, but there are also similarities that help us figure out how they changed and what species they are.

Scientists gather data and fossils from similar species in their time and compare them to figure out how they are related to each other. To figure out the species they are related to, they first have to get a fossil that matches the fossils in the species we have today. If the fossil matches somewhat, the scientists try to figure out how they evolved over time. For example, Pedro, the five foot tall penguin, is related to modern penguins we have today. The scientists compared the DNA in Pedro and modern penguins to see how they relate to each other.

Some examples that scientists gathered to help explain the species are the amount of bones, the size of the bones, the layout of the bones, and patterns that they are able to uncover in the species. All of these little details are able to show and tell the scientist what time period the species lived in, how big it was, and how it changed over time.

For example in China they found a 525 million year old fossil that belongs to an ancient worm like critter which is known as CardioDictyon catenulum. Scientists gathered evidence such as fossils of different animals and studied its features and shape to determine how it looked and how other similar organisms evolved from it. They also use DNA examples to figure out how they adapt to their environment and compare them to other animals that are closely related.

You might be wondering how scientists knew about organisms that lived so long ago. Well according to National Geographic Education it states that scientists have used fossil remains to understand the different aspects of extinct and living organisms. This also helps find changes in the population. They also say that scientists use fossils to sort out how their ancestors lived and evolved overtime. Scientists use fossil records, direct observation, and comparative studies of DNA and anatomy.

The evidence that scientists gathered to help explain how different species formed and changed over time, was using the fossils from the past and comparing them to the fossils now, Which as you can see is not the same. To figure out how long it has been, scientists can look at the layers and fossils that are found above or around it. This will make an accurate estimation on when they died. They find fossils and bring them into the lab to determine an even better estimate. One way that they can represent changes over time is by having models of the skeletal system. For example, a horse toe bones decreased as time went by.

One evidence is that Pedro is one fossil remains that scientists found. He was an organism that lived a long time ago with a similar penguin background. With more research they found out more. Pedro was in the penguin family, he was really big, with the height of 5 feet. He also had really thick and strong bone, indicating that he was a deep diver. Another evidence is that scientists found a background of horse fossils. Scientist said that these organisms were smaller, around three times smaller. With more observing and research these organism had more toes than the modern horses in today life. - Jaedyn Rumbaoa

Scientists know that living organisms live so long because they study fossils and they find the record of time. There are also different layers of what the fossils, the lower layers are older and the higher layer are younger. They look at molecular biology and genetics, also the chemical traces from the fossil . Bio geography and anatomy shows how species formed and changed over time.

Scientists know about organisms that lived so long ago by researching their fossils and getting evidence of life from a long time ago. With this knowledge scientists can reveal the record of history for earth, more about the organisms, how they lived and more. Scientists have gathered evidence from fossils, their genetics, their DNA, and more to combine all these information and specifically identify the organisms.
