By supplying the Chinese with heroin, they became addicted and un-able to fight, using this they started to claim and force trade and imports to China. While they fought back, their attempt was futile and didn't work. Weakened and unable to fight back. A massive rebellion started which went by the boxers, they were massive, and very violent but didn't last very long. The “open door policy” was a massive issue that “allowed” everyone top basically own part of a port and trade. This caused a massive foreign influence since they could not defend themselves or fight back.

American Commodore Matthew Perry brought gifts to the Japanese emperor, without knowing the Tokugawa Shogunate was the actual leader, this resulted in the Shogunate to fall apart, thus giving full power to Emperor.
When the emperor gained formal control of Japan, the "Meiji restoration" began which was the modernization of Japan.
